Probably back-formation from achlamydeous, archichlamydeous, metachlamydeous, monochlamydeous;[1] or from Ancient Greek χλᾰμῠ́δ- (khlamúd-, stem of χλᾰμῠ́ς (khlamús)) chlamys +‎ -eous.[2]
