editUncertain; perhaps from cigarro (“male cicada”), a form of cigarra (“cicada”) found in some older texts particularly from southern Spain,[1] or from a Mayan language, compare Yucatec Maya siyar (“to smoke tobacco leaves”), Q'eqchi sik'ar (“to smoke”).[2]
