editFrom German Low German dösen, from Middle High German dōsen (“to snooze, slumber" also "to roar, rustle, whizz, snore”), from Old High German dōsōn (“to roar”), from Proto-West Germanic *þus- (“to roar”), related to Middle High German dœsen, tœsen (“to scatter, destroy”); ultimately from the root of Dunst (“haze”). Compare dösig for more.
