editVerb
editgaza
- third-person singular past historic of gazer
Italian
editVerb
editgaza
- inflection of gazare:
Latin
editEtymology
editFrom Ancient Greek γάζα (gáza).
Pronunciation
edit- (Classical Latin) IPA(key): /ˈɡaz.za/, [ˈɡäz̪d̪͡z̪ä]
- (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): /ˈɡad.d͡za/, [ˈɡäd̪ː͡z̪ä]
Noun
editgaza f (genitive gazae); first declension
- treasury
- treasure, riches
- 29 BCE – 19 BCE, Virgil, Aeneid 1.118–119:
- Adpārent rārī nantēs in gurgite vastō,
arma virum, tabulaeque, et Trōia gāza per undās.- [These things] could be seen, scattered – [men] swimming in the vast abyss, men’s weaponry, and also planks [from the ships], and Trojan treasure – throughout the waves.
(The Trojan fleet incurs devastating losses during the storm at sea. Here, “arma” would mean shields, helmets, and miscellaneous equipment capable of floating; “virum” is a syncopated form of the genitive plural, “virorum.”)
- [These things] could be seen, scattered – [men] swimming in the vast abyss, men’s weaponry, and also planks [from the ships], and Trojan treasure – throughout the waves.
- Adpārent rārī nantēs in gurgite vastō,
- wealth
