editInherited from Ottoman Turkish قوانج (kıvanç, “joy; vain, conceited”, noun; adjective). From Proto-Turkic *kïb (“luck, happiness”).[1] Cognate with Kazakh қуаныш (quanyş, “joy”), Kyrgyz кубаныч (kubanıc), etc.
