Italian
editEtymology
editInherited from Latin plūs, from Old Latin *plous, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁-, *pelh₁u- (“many”).
The initial autogemination, though lost in standard pronunciation, is still found in most varieties of regional Italian. The gemination occurs predictably before the palatalization of the original liquid -l-, compare doppio, orecchio, etc.
