From Middle Dutch vinnich (rotten), from vinne (pustule, blister). The noun is cognate with Middle Low German vinne, German Finne. Further origin uncertain. Some consider it the same word as vin (“fin”, etymology 2 below), positing an original sense “pointed protrusion”, but this is speculative.
