Morro Dois Irmãos
Vidigal is a neighborhood in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its favela is Morro do Vidigal, which gave rise to the Vidigal neighborhood. Despite being a poor area, like most favelas, Vidigal is located between some of Rio's most affluent neighborhoods, such as Leblon and São Conrado, on the Morro Dois Irmão<nowiki/>s. It is home to various animals and plants from the Atlantic Forest. In 2000, its Human Development Index (HDI) was 0.873, the 38th highest in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro (a result derived from its HDI being calculated together with São Conrado). Until the 2000s, it was merely a favela, but with the expulsion of drug trafficking, the neighborhood began a slow and gradual urbanization process due to its real estate and tourism potential. Currently, it has the 21st most valuable square meter in the city, costing an average of R$ 6,706, approximately R$ 2,800 above the city's average of R$ 3,853.
The Vidigal favela is located at the base of pt ("Two Brothers Hill"), which inspired a song by Chico Buarque.

Considered by many a postcard of Rio and a favorable place for fishing, it quickly gained fame as an excellent spot for sea views. From a romantic perspective, some people claim that the view of the sea from Vidigal is the most beautiful in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Toponymy
Vidigal was named after a former commander of the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, Major Miguel Nunes Vidigal, who, due to his services, received a piece of land at the foot of Morro Dois Irmãos as a gift from the Benedictine monks in 1820. The area was occupied by shacks starting in 1940, giving rise to the current favela.

Transportation
Since October 9, 2017, there has been a fare integration between legalized vans and the Rio de Janeiro Metro, originally costing R$ 5.00, allowing residents of Vidigal and Rocinha to pay a lower price to use both modes of transportation. The integration is done at the Jardim de Alah and São Conrado stations, and at least 66 vans, identified with a yellow stripe on the side, are authorized to connect with the metro. The benefit is available to passengers with a RioCard, and the integration must be completed within a maximum of two and a half hours.

Security
In general, favelas are considered dangerous areas, due to drug trafficking activities, however this reality has changed over the years in many parts of Rio. Some favelas, specially Vidigal, has been through a process called “pacification”, which means the government intensified police enforcement with checkpoints and establishing police stations in key locations in order to bring safety to both community and local commercial activities. On Vidigal the proccess started on January 18, 2012 and the community began to be served by the 19th Pacifying Police Unit (UPP).

This process has provided a new status of neighborhood and safe area to Vidigal, becoming a very touristic area.

Vidigal is a neighborhood and a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Geography

[edit]

Vidigal overlooks Ipanema Beach (Portuguese: Praia de Ipanema) and Ilhas Cagarras. It is located in the South Zone of Rio, between Leblon and São Conrado neighborhoods.

Morro Dois Irmãos

[edit]

The Vidigal favela is located at the base of Morro Dois Irmãos ("Two Brothers Hill"), which inspired a song by Chico Buarque.[1]

Morro Dois Irmãos is also the location of a very frequented and sought-after Two Brothers trail (Trilha Morro Dois Irmãos).[2] To complete this hike, one would travel to Vidigal. At the base, near Praça do Vidigal, visitors may choose to ride to the Vila Olímpica soccer field (the entrance for the hike) by Kombi van or on the moto-taxis. There are two viewpoints in this hike before reaching the final destination of the peak. From the first, you will be able to see Rocinha, which is the largest favela in Latin America, and a clear view of Pedra da Gávea. From the second, you are able to see Serra da Carioca, Gávea, Corcovado (where Christ the Redeemer stands tall), and Pedra Bonita. Upon reaching the highest peak of the Morro Dois Irmãos you are able to see all of South Zone (Zona Sul) ranging from Botafogo to Leblon, including a view of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas).[citation needed]

Crime

[edit]

In November 2011, Vidigal and its neighboring community, Rocinha, were pacified by the Pacifying Police Unit.[3]

In September 2017, a so-called coup d'état took place in Rocinha [clarification needed] which saw its criminal control shift from ADA to CV (Comando Vermelho or Red Command).[4]

As of December 2017, and through December 2020, Vidigal is a completely transformed favela, for the worse, where it is not uncommon to hear daily heavy arms fire and even see criminals carrying machine-guns on the main street, Av. Presidente João Goulart at all times of day. In 2020, at times there were gun battles[5] between the military police and drug traffickers.[6][7][8][9]
