Kangana Ranaut (Template:Lang-hi) (born March 23, 1986, Himachal Pradesh ,India)^[1] is an Indian actress who acts in Bollywood films.

Kangana Ranaut made her bollywood debut in the year 2006 with stupendous performances in the films like Gangster & Woh Lamhe.

In 2009 she was recognised with Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her excellent work in film called Fashion.

Early life

Kangana was born on March 23rd 1986 ,in a town called Bhambla in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh ,to Asha, a school teacher and Amardeep, a businessman from a family belonging to Rajput descent. She has a younger sister and a brother, Rangoli & Akshit.Her family was initially in Shimla and then moved to Chandigarh. ^[2]

She did her schooling in Chandigarh from DAV model school Sector 15 before moving back to Shimla. She completed her high school in Shimla & decided to pursue career of glamour .She moved to Delhi and joined the Elite Model Management Delhi Branch with the prospect of becoming a model.She joined Asmita Theatre group (2003-2005 Batch) as a theatre actor.^[3] She was with the group only for 9 months.Having discovered that she has a talent to act naturally she decided to become a movie actor.She relocated to Mumbai in early 2004 and joined Asha Chandra's acting school to brush herself to face camera. She struggled initially to get into movies, but had no luck as she was an outsider. After struggling for nearly a year she met Anurag Basu in September 2005 and was selected for Gangster. ^[4]Kangana was supposed to debut in Pahlaj Nihalani 's movie "I love you Boss" for which she even did a publicity shoot ,but as soon as she got selected for Gangster she backed off from the project.

Kangana was accused of lying her age and being born in 1981,but her representatives decided to sue the publication Mumbai Mirror and presented her passport which stated she is born in 1986 . The publication withdrew the statement with an apology.

Career

Theatre Career

Ranaut started her career as theatre actor in Delhi with the Asmita theatre group. She trained under eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur^[5]. She participated in his theatre workshop at India Habitat Centre and acted in many plays.

Her first play with Arvind Gaur was Girish Karnad's Taledanda (Rakt-Kalyan).

Film career

Ranaut moved to Mumbai to try her luck in movies and received the offer for Mahesh Bhatt's 2006 film Gangster. During September 2005, Hindi Film-maker Anurag Basu spotted her having coffee in a cafe in Bombay, and signed her up for this movie. ^[6].

The film was critically and commercially successful and ^[7] her performance was especially applauded. This was followed by another acclaimed performance in Woh Lamhe (2006).

Later, Kangana starred in yet another Anurag Basu project, the hit film Life In A... Metro, as a confused girl who is looking for a real love. Her performance in the film earned her rave reviews. She also starred in Shakalaka Boom Boom (2007) as an aspiring singer. Her next film Fashion starring Priyanka Chopra and Mugdha Godse was released on October 29th 2008 and was very successful. Kangana has received extremely positive reviews for her portrayal of a supermodel who loses everything on drug abuse. Kangana's role in Fashion was critically and commercially acclaimed fetching her various nominations and awards in the best supporting actress category including the prestigious Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Her latest film is Raaz - The Mystery Continues with Emraan Hashmi. The movie was released on January 23rd 2009 and has been a commercial success and declared as a reasonable hit.
