Legislative Assembly elections will be held in February or March 2022 to elect 117 members for 16th Assembly of Punjab Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly elected in 2017 will expire on 27 March 2022 unless dissolved sooner.[1][2]
Background
Punjab is a border state which shares international border with Pakistan. It is the only state with majority of Sikh religion. It is very sensitive state and Farmers Protest were also started in Punjab during June 2020 which will definitely affect politics of Punjab in this assembly elections.
Shiromani Akali dal broke its alliance with BJP after more than 2 decades on 3 farmer bills passed by lok sabha.
Lok Insaaf Party and Aam Aadmi Party fought 2017 election in alliance and now they have also broken their alliance

- Dalits (Scheduled Castes) constitute 31.94% of the population, the highest percentage amongst all the states.
- Other Backward Classes (OBCs) like -Sainis, Sunar, Kambojs, Tarkhans/Ramgarhias, Gurjars, Kumhars/Prajapatis, Telis, Banjaras, Lohars constitute 31.3 % of the population.
- Jat-Sikhs comprise 21% of the population while other forward castes (general category) - Brahmins, Khatris/Bhapas, Bania, Thakurs/Rajputs constitute around rest.
- As of 2016, Government of India has not publicly released Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011 caste population data for every single non-SC/ST castes (General castes,OBC/EBCs) in India.

Punjab have 117 Seats for MLAs which are elected from single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. 34 Constituencies are reserved for SCs As per Constitution and ECI guidelines Eligible voters must be Indian citizens, 18 or older than 18, an ordinary resident of the polling area of the constituency and registered to vote (name included in the electoral rolls), possess a valid voter identification card issued by the Election Commission of India or an equivalent. Some people convicted of electoral or other offences are barred from voting.

Punjab is situated in Northern india which share boundry with 3 States i.e. Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and with 2 Union territory's of Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. It also Shares it's border with Pakistan.
The election Schedule will declare by Election Commission of India on the reasonable time.[4]
Last year election dates were announced on 4 January and polling was completed on 4 February 2017. Results were declared on 11 March 2017.

- Doaba is the smallest region with 23 assembly constituencies and 4 districts
- Malwa is the biggest region with 14 districts and 69 assembly constituencies
- 34 seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes and Punjab have no reservation for ST community.

In March 2021, Shiromani Akali Dal started holding rallies and protests under slogan "Punjab Mangda Jawaab", party president Sukhbir Singh Badal targets Amarinder Singh over several issues including power tariff hike, VAT on fuel, and loan waiver promise.[7][8][9]
