Angel Locsin (truename Angelica Colmenares on April 23, 1985), is a Famous Filipina Television & film actress, commercial model, film producer and fashion designer who was introduced in GMA Network's youth-oriented program, Click. Locsin rose to prominence after being cast as one of the lead stars in the fantasy-themed television series Mulawin in 2004. Soon after, she starred as the superheroine Darna in the TV adaptation of the popular Mars Ravelo comics hit. Locsin top-billed in several films and is known as the screen love interest of Richard Gutierrez and Dennis Trillo. When her contract expired last March 2007, Angel did not renew her contract to her mother studio, GMA Network and signed an exclusive contract in ABS-CBN despite her booming career in GMA. According to her it is just a career move and a new level of being a better actress.

Early Life and Career

She grew up in Bulacan, Philippines. Her parents separated when she was fourteen, and she has since lived with her father (Angelo Colmenares). Locsin's career in show business began after she was discovered by a talent scout while she cut classes with a friend and was shopping at SM City North EDSA in Quezon City. She auditioned for several commercials. She was supposed to be part of the Batch 9 of ABS-CBN's Star Circle Batch 9, but she failed to sign a contract with ABS-CBN'S Talent Center because her father, Angelo Colmenares did'nt agree. After a year, she became a contract star of GMA.

Locsin first appeared in Click, a teen-oriented program on the GMA Network, as the tomboyish Charley (short for Charlotte), where she was first paired with Leo Pascual, then eventually to Railey Valeroso.

In 2003, her boyfriend, actor Miko Sotto, fell off from the 9th floor of his condominium in December 2003. Afterwards, her boyfriend's mother, movie actress and ABC newscaster Ali Sotto, donated his eyes to those in need. Angel eventually portrayed the dramatization of the life of one of these recipients in the TV drama show Magpakailanman. After appearing in Click, Locsin gained further exposure when she was cast in the television shows Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw Pa Rin, All Together Now, and Love to Love. Locsin gets her big break in 2004 when She was chosen to role as Alwina in Mulawin with Richard Gutierrez as Aguiluz her Leading man in the series.

Locsin also admitted on Filipino talk show Ali that she has been an avid fan of WWF/WWE (World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment) since childhood. Her favorite wrestlers are Triple H and the Filipino-Greek-American Batista, whom she met at the show 'Eat Bulaga' backstage.

Celebrity Stardom

Locsin became very popular in the whole Philippines when she auditioned and won the role Darna in GMA Network's telefantasya entitled Mar's Ravelos Darna which aired in 2005. Darna premiered having 47.1% and earned up to 52.1% in the 4rth episode the rating was the highest ratings on Philippine television ever. The series got over-all ratings of 39.9%. Since then Locsin started to make box-office films such as Let the Love Begin which grossed P120 Million Pesos on the Box-office and Mulawin:The Movie, numerous endorsements and fabulous projects in GMA Network. Locsin also won in FHM Philippines as the sexiest Woman in 2005. After her very successful show, Locsin starred again with Dennis Trillo in Majika in 2006 , playing the role Sabina with Argo as her Love enterest. She also starred in films such as I Will Always Love You which grossed P116 Million Pesos on the Box-office, TXT and Mano Po 5:Gua Ay Di. In 2007 Locsin She gave her extra-ordinary performance when she starred in Asian Treasures with Robin Padilla,which premiered having a rating of 41.8% ,the series was the most expensive program in the Philippines costing P140 Million Pesos, which also shot in several countries such as Thailand, China, Mongolia & Vietnam. However this was the last project of Angel in GMA Network after She transferred to ABS-CBN. Locsín also reunited with Richard Gutierrez for the movie The Promise which was co-produced by Regal Entertainment and GMA Films Production. Their roles were considered more mature than any they have done in the past, and the movie showed a bed scene between the two characters. Angel also signed an exclusive contract in ABS-CBN and Star Cinema. In early 2008 Locsin was paired to Piolo Pascual in their first ever Show together Lobo which premiered in January 28, 2008 having 27.7%,the highest reception among (Palos & Kung Fu Kids) in Mega Manila ratings. While the said show is now the second most-watched program all over urban Philippines. Locsin once again proved that she is still the Queen of Primetime television

Despite her hectic schedule,Angel also put up a ladies' sportswear line called "Angel Active" in November 2007. The launch was reportedly a huge success; the clothing line is set to be distributed in selected SM Shoemart outlets. Angel actively participates in conceptualizing designs for the clothing line.AVON cosmetics recently launched a new perfume named after her, called Cristobal Jumalon Wish of Happiness.She recently pose in Cosmopolitan Philippines wearing a very sexy swimsuit bikini..

Endorsements

Locsin is one of the most famous product endorser in the Philippines. She was first shown with her TV Ad in Axe in 2004. Then in 2005 Locsin continuosly endorsed Robitussin, Fujifilm, Eskinol, Happee Toothpaste, Mcdonalds & Head & Shoulders. Since then Locsin became one of the most famous endorser among of her numerous endorsements are San Mig Coffee, Jag Skinny Jeans, Calayan, W.L Foods, AB Spire Notebooks, Priston Netplay, Smart Communications, Belo Medical Group, Avon, Lotus Ballpen, Converse Shoes, Timex Watches, Centrum, Magnolia Health Tea, Avon Wish of Happiness and McDonalds Summer Colors of Love.

Controversies

Locsin had her fair share of controversy after appearing in a TV ad for Axe (manufactured by Unilever Philippines). Many feminist groups, as well as former Senator Nikki Coseteng, complained about the offensive gestures in the advertisement. In the television commercial, Angel is teasing a man by showing off money and her body, but the man approaches Angel and takes only her money. Because of these complaints, Unilever pulled out the commercial.

On July 20, 2007, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 81 Presiding Judge Ma. Theresa Yadao dismissed Locsin's petition for reformation of instrument and/or rescission/breach of contract and damages filed against Rebecca "Becky" Aguila after granting her motion to dismiss, based on settlement of their differences. Locsin sued her manager on December 6 where she asked the court to order the reformation of the terms of the Artist Management Contract which she had signed, to reflect the true intention of the parties.

Locsin's five-year contract with GMA expired in mid-2007. Her manager, Becky Aguila, and her father, Angel Colmenares, sent a letter just a few hours away from the first and official statment confirming her transfer, formally informing GMA that her talent would not renew her contract with the Kapuso network. In August 2007, she transferred to ABS-CBN Network, the rival TV station of GMA. She told in an interview with Boy Abunda that she is no longer happy with GMA and she is looking forward to having a better career in ABS-CBN. She worked round the clock all year round from the day she became a star and was left with little time to rest that even brought her to hospitals due to exhaustion. She also had little or almost no quality time with her family, most specially with her blind father. Angel fully supports her family and is the bread winner. With her statement, GMA was disappointed. Although on the same note, Angel did her part while she was in GMA, she made blockbuster movies and top rating tv series, GMA's angst was on Locsin's denial of her iminent transfer until the very last day. Her official letter was also submitted to GMA in the morning of the same day she finally officially announced that she's switching networks. This unethical and unprofessional manner of informing the network which boosted her to stardom caused GMA and fans alike to frown upon this seemingly ingrate act.

Moreover, Locsin had a video sex scandal. The video was being sold in a pirated DVD. After a while, they figured out that the woman in the video was a pornstar from Thailand "Natt Chanapa" who looked just like her.
