Biography

Angela Hill grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.[6][7] Hill has been married three times. The first marriage was to Charles Garland Robinette. Robinette was divorced from his first wife on July 7, 1977, and a month later, in August 1977, Robinette and Hill announced they were getting married. Robinette and Hill were co-anchoring the news together at WWL-TV.[8] Ten years later, they announced they had divorced.[9] Their divorce was finalized on April 3, 1987.[10] In October of the same year, Hill met Dr. Darrell Wolfley. Dr. Wolfley proposed to Hill on Friday, February 11, 1988.[11] They were divorced on April 3, 1995.[12][3] In 1996, Hill met Dr. Irwin Marcus. In March 2001, Angela Hill and Dr. Marcus eloped.[citation needed]

Prior to moving to New Orleans, she worked as an anchor and assistant news director at KGBT-TV, the CBS affiliate in Harlingen, Texas.[7] In April 1975, Angela Hill was hired as the consumer reporter for WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.[4][6][7][13][14]  In September 1975, Hill became the first female anchor at WWL-TV.[13][15] Between 1975 and 2013, she co-anchored the 5 PM, 6 PM and 10 PM newscasts. For several years she was paired with anchor Garland Robinette, to whom she was married from 1978 to 1987.[16][17] In 1998, the newscasts Hill co-anchored, achieved a 20 Nielsen household rating, double that of its closest competitor WDSU, and the highest rating for an early-evening newscast of all stations within Nielsen's 38 metered markets.[18]   During Hill's 38-year career at WWL-TV, she traveled to Paris, London, Beirut, China, Africa and Rome where she would deliver the news and produce documentaries.[15][19]  In 1984, she played the role of a woman reporter in the film Tightrope.[20]

In 1989, Angela Hill created and hosted the Angela Show, a daily talk show.[7]  The Angela Show started in 1989 and ended in 1996. The Angela Show aired 1,668 shows.[6][13]  Hill's interviewees included notable actors, authors, fashion designers, musicians, and politicians including Danny Thomas,[21] Oprah Winfrey,[22] Anne Rice,[23] Bill Clinton,[24] Cokie Roberts,[25] Lindy Boggs,[25] Dave Thomas,[26][27] Willie Nelson,[28] Tommy Hilfiger,[29] Roberta Flack,[30] John Goodman,[31] and Oscar de la Renta.[32]

Angela Hill has been nationally recognized for her contributions as an American journalist. She has been awarded the following national awards: Gabriel Award, Gracie Awards and Freedoms Foundation Award.[5][33]

During her career as an American journalist, Angela Hill produced documentaries on China, in 1979, and the Golden Fleece Awards, in 1978.[19][34]

On June 6, 2013, the New Orleans City Council honored Angela Hill for more than 35 years of service in New Orleans, Louisiana.[35]
