  • Comment: The band's website (grandcadaver.com) is a primary source and therefore not independent or reliable. Interviews with band members and the band's record label are also considered primary sources. Instagram, online record stores and blog sites are not acceptable or reliable sources either. Grand Cadaver is a Swedish death metal supergroup formed in 2020, with members from Gothenburg, Stockholm and Falun.[1] Their sound is based in the early Stockholm death scene.[2] The band has released two full-length albums, one EP, and several singles, and has also contributed to compilation albums.[1][3] The group consists of Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), Christian Jansson (Dark Tranquillity, Pagandom), Stefan Lagegren (The Gridfted, ex-Tiamat/Treblinka, ex-Expulsion), Daniel Liljekvist (Ikhon, Vorder, ex-Katatonia) and Alex Stjernfeldt (Novarupta, CHILD, Young Acid, SKRCKVLDET, Let them Hang ex-The Moth Gatherer, ex-Mr. Death).[1][2][4][5][6][7][8]

History

[edit]

The band formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when Alex Stjernfeldt and Daniel Liljekvist decided to start an old-school death metal band. They invited Stjernfeldt's former bandmates Stefan Lagergren and Christian Jansson, as well as his neighbour Mikael Stanne to join the group.[1][9] For them, the band was a way to return to the rehearsal room, enjoy some beers, and create the death metal music they grew up with.[2][4] In a 2020 interview Stanne briefly mentioned the band, though he did not reveal any specific names. He noted that he was working at a Stockholm death metal band with some friends from old death metal bands, and that they were preparing to release an EP in the coming months.[10]

The five members met for the first time at Welfare Sounds recording studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, to begin recording the EP "Madness Comes", which they completed over a weekend.[9] Initially the band only planned to release an EP as a side project during the COVID-19 pandemic when all tours were on hold, with no intention of producing a full-length album.[11]

During an interview, Stjernfeldt confirmed that they were working on a full-length album with the same members.[12] "Into The Maw of Death", the debut album, was recorded in six days. The album was released on 29 October 2021,[13] and awarded "Best Metal" at the 2022 Manifest awards.[14] After the recording of the album there were no concrete plans to recording any more albums.[2]

When the COVID-19 pandemic subsided and the member's full-time bands resumed touring, the recording pace slowed (both the EP and debut album were recorded the same year). However, the band managed to write and record the follow-up album "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" in 2022,[11] releasing it on 29 August 2023.[15] The band said that this album was conceived and recorded with the same mindset and the same team as their previous recordings, keeping it quick, spontaneous and enjoyable, and this time it turned out a bit more dynamic, with the pummeling fury interspersed with some doom, gloom and darkness.[11] The B-side of the album's "Reign Through Fire" single is dedicated to Lars-Göran Petrov as a celebration of life and his years of service to death metal.[16]

Grand Cadaver's first live appearance took place in Gothenburg on 15 October 2021,[17] during Suicide Records festival "15 Years of Mayhem"[18][19], followed by a tour with At The Gates later the same year.[20] In 2024 they performed their first show outside Scandinavia, at the "Dark Easter Metal Meeting" in Germany.[9][21]

In 2020 the German magazine Legacy included Grand Cadaver in a compilation album.[22] In 2022 Grand Cadaver contributed to the Sick Taste Records compilation album Worldwide Underground Against War, alongside 57 other bands, to help the refugees from the Ukrainian war.[23] In 2023 they contributed with a new, unreleased song to the Suicide Records compilation album In the Loving Memory of You / Time Will Heal, alongside 15 other bands: Skitsystem, Knivad, Demonic Death Judge, M:40, Downfall Of Gaia, The Moth Gatherer, Fredag den 13:e, Besvärjelsen, Novarupta, Fabian Brusk Jahn, Rainbird, Ulmus, Division of Laura Lee, GUHTS, and Firebreather. This initiative from Suicide Records founder, Roger Andersson, who lost three close people to suicide,[24] aims to, in his words, "respectfully reflect the emotions that arise when someone close chooses to end their life". All proceeds from the album will go to the Swedish suicide-prevention non-profit organisation, Suicide Zero.[3] The album was released on 10 September 2024,[25] on the World Suicide Prevention Day.
