Eduard Hellvig is a Romanian politician, Secretary-General of the National Liberal Party, Vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputy of Uninominal College nr.4, Ilfov.

Professional training and activity

Eduard Hellvig majored in Political Science and Public Administration at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca in 1997. During his studies, he won a scholarship from the Soros Open Society Foundation for the project “Who governs or who holds the power in Romania?”, also becoming the coordinator of the Cluj branch of the Foundation. He also held the position of Director of Programs at the Institute of Political Analysis from Cluj-Napoca.

In 1997, just after graduation, Eduard Hellvig got his broker license from the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB).

In 1999 he graduated from the Summer School organized by the Centre for Post-Communist Studies of the University of Maryland, College Park.

From 2001 to 2003, Eduard Hellvig held the position of General Manager at the Institute of Social Studies, and in 2004 he became the Executive Manager of Sintezis Romania.

He continued his professional training, graduating in 2006 from the National Defense College of the Carol I National Defence University and from the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies.

In 2009, Eduard Hellvig got his PhD in Political Science at the National School of Political Science and Public Administration Bucharest (SNSPA)[1].

Political activity

From 1998 to 2000, Eduard Hellvig was the political adviser for the former vice-president of the National Liberal Party Horia Rusu and for the Minister of Internal Affairs Constantin Dudu Ionescu, also becoming the adviser for the presidential candidate Mugur Isărescu.

In 2004 he was elected deputy in the Romanian Parliament from Bihor[2], during his term also working as a Secretary of the Defense, Public Order and National Security Commission and as a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Eduard Hellvig was elected in 2006 to be one of the first Members of the European Parliament from Romania[3], and during his term there was a member of the International Trade Committee (INTA) and the Security and Defense Subcommittee (SEDE).

Since 2008, he is a member of the National Liberal Party, and in 2009 he became the advisor of the party’s president, Crin Antonescu, also coordinating his presidential campaign the same year. Since the beginning of 2011, he holds the position of Secretary-General of the National Liberal Party, position he was confirmed in during the party’s 2013 congress[4].

In 2012, he was part of the Victor Ponta Cabinet as the Minister of Regional Development and Tourism[5].

He won the Uninominal College nr. 4 - Ilfov during the 2012 parliamentary election[6]. Eduard Hellvig is currently the Vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies[7] and a member of the Foreign Affairs Commission and a delegate of Romania to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Personal life

Eduard Hellvig is married to Andreea Hellvig, with whom he has one daughter.
