Kundali Bhagya |
Kumkum Bhagya (Vermilion in my Fate) (International title: Twist of Fate) is a Hindi-language Indian soap opera. It premiered on April 15, 2014.[1][2] and airs on weeknights on Zee TV. The show stars Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalhia in the lead roles, and is loosely based on the novel Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.[3]
The pivotal characters of this show are strong, feisty women, living together in an all-female matriarchal family. The series initially starred Sriti Jha, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Mrunal Thakur, Arjit Taneja and Vin Rana. It is produced and developed by Ekta Kapoor under the banner Balaji Telefilms, and is directed by Sameer Kulkarni.
Due to Kumkum Bhagya's popularity, a spin-off series has been produced. Kundali Bhagya portrays the life of Pragya's long lost sisters, Preeta and Srishti.[4][5][6]
Plot
The story revolves around Pragya Arora (Sriti Jha), a teacher and Abhishek Mehra (Shabir Ahluwalia), a rock star. Sarla Arora (Supriya Shukla), who runs a marriage hall, lives with the hope of seeing her two daughters happily married. Pragya, the elder daughter, is practical, hardworking and teaches at a college. Bulbul Arora (Mrunal Thakur), the younger daughter, has her head in the clouds. She has a job but hates her boss, Purab Khanna (initially portrayed by Arijit Taneja, later replaced by Vin Rana). The show follows the lives of the two sisters and their hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Initially, the show followed a love triangle between Pragya, Bulbul and Suresh Shrivastav (Pragya's colleague and best friend) where Pragya loved Suresh, who had feelings for Bulbul, leading to Pragya and Suresh's prior engagement being called off.
Abhishek (often referred to as Rock Star Abhi) is a rock star who is in a relationship with a supermodel Tanu Mehta (initially portrayed by Madhurima Tuli, later replaced by Leena Jumani). Purab, Abhi's best friend, is engaged to his sister Aliya Mehra (Shikha Singh). Purab and Bulbul initially hate each other, only to fall in love eventually. Aliya misunderstands Purab's affair with Bulbul, incorrectly assuming that he loves Pragya.
As a result, Aliya and Tanu, together with Abhi, plan to get Abhi married to Pragya out of revenge. After the marriage, Pragya becomes aware of the fact but for her sister's protection, leads Abhi to believe that she was in a relationship with Purab, eventually asking Bulbul to forget Purab. Purab reluctantly agrees to get married to Aliya but is unable to forget Bulbul and on his marriage day, he elopes with Bulbul.
Aliya and Tanu conspire against Pragya but their plans fail and instead brings Pragya closer to Abhi, leading them to develop feelings for one another. When Abhi realises Aliya's intentions of defaming Pragya, he slaps Aliya, leading her to develop a grudge against her brother. Abhi eventually improves his relations with Purab and Bulbul.
Tanu gets pregnant after a one-night stand with Nikhil. She fakes her DNA reports and declares that Abhi is the father in order to get him back, leading to Abhi and Pragya's separation. Tanu is supported by Nikhil, who is after Abhi's wealth, Aliya who wants revenge, and Abhi's cousin Raj, who blames Abhi for his misfortunes. Pragya overhears Aliya and Tanu's conversation but before being able to tell Abhi, she gets involved in an accident and is declared dead.
After one month, Pragya returns, having a new motive for revealing her enemies and getting Abhi back. Bulbul and Purab get married and a sequence of love and jealousy starts between Bulbul, Purab and Aliya. To save her sister from Aliya, Bulbul risks her life and dies. An infuriated Pragya finally reveals the truth about Aliya, who is then banished from the family. Raj's misunderstanding about Abhi is cleared by Pragya after she reveals that his wife Mitali is actually responsible for his problems.
Pragya finally discovers Tanu and Nikhil's relationship, and decides to expose Tanu, but in vain. Tanu has an accident, resulting in a miscarriage and blames Pragya. Facing Abhi's anger, Pragya finally reveals the truth about Tanu, and gains back his trust. The two propose to each other in Lonavla. However, Abhi loses his memory in a car accident, forgetting the last two-and-a-half years of his life, including his love for Pragya. She leaves him, but does not divorce him.
Two months later Pragya overhears her mother saying that she has lost the Kumkum Bhagya Marriage Hall. To help her family, she gets recruited as a receptionist at Love Life Music Company, where she meets Abhi who is there to record his new album. They slowly become friends and Abhi hires her as his personal assistant. Aliya, who has taken advantage of Abhi's amnesia, returns and wants Abhi to marry Tanu in order to keep him away from Pragya. Abhi and Pragya's relationship blooms into something more.
After many conspiracies, Pragya tells Aliya and Tanu that she will bring back Abhi's memory before his marriage to Tanu. She is supported by Dadi and Purab. Abhi has some unclear flashbacks of his past. Later, both confess their love for each other.
When Tanu's mother lies about having cancer, Abhi agrees to marry Tanu, leaving Pragya heartbroken. On the marriage day, Pragya comes to meet Abhi for the last time. Dadi and Purab plan to steal the bride but Pragya gets kidnapped by Nikhil. When Sarla tells Abhi that Pragya is kidnapped, he leaves the wedding and goes to save Pragya. He saves Pragya and after some ups and downs in their journey home, they decide to marry in the jungle.
When Abhi and Pragya leave, they have a car accident and Abhi regains his memory. They meet Pragya's father and find out that Pragya has two other sisters. But unfortunately, Nikhil's goon shoots Pragya when they were trying to run from them and Pragya falls into the dam. Abhi tries to find her but is unsuccessful. When he returns home, Sarla wants Pragya, but Tanu and Aliya throw her out. Abhi stops them and reveals that he has regained his memory.
After one month and two days leap, Abhi finds Pragya and performs a concert for her. He finds Munni, a villager and Pragya's lookalike, and thinks her to be Pragya and takes her home; terrorists attack and a fire breaks out. Aliya tells Munni what to do and threatens that she will kill her sister's children if she does not cooperate. Munni unwillingly helps them.
Pragya, who was in a coma returns to Mumbai to meet Abhi but finds out that he is married to her lookalike. Munni tells Pragya about Aliya's conspiracies so Pragya returns to Mehra's house as Munni and decides to hide her identity from Aliya and Tanu until Munni finds her kids. But Tanu jealously exposes Pragya, still thinking her to be Munni, and Abhi throws Pragya out of his house.
While on a trip to deposit Abhi's money to the bank, Purab meets Disha who saves him from some goons and marries her to prevent her from marrying Sangram Singh who only wants to hurt her. After Disha confesses her love, Purab feels guilty about still loving Bulbul and decides to give her the love she deserves and they consummate their marriage.
A new villain, Simonica, enters the house as Abhi's secretary. Abhi killed her husband Dushyant, so she seeks revenge; she plans and plots and does many conspiracies but in vain.
At first Pragya does not tell Abhi about the killer and hides her identity but later at his birthday she tells him the truth. On the same day she finds that Simonica is the killer. Simonica again tries to kill Abhishek and Pragya but her all plans go in vain. Simonica tries to kill Abhi or send him to life imprisonment by involving him in her own murder case. But, with the efforts of Pragya and Purab, Simonica is proved wrong and is sent to jail.
While the police is taking Simonica to jail, an accident takes place and Simonica escapes and reaches the Mehra house. A party has been organized in Mehra house as Purab and Disha are soon becoming parents. Simonica tries to kill Abhi and Pragya but her plan goes in vain. Tanu signs a deal with Simonica that if she will leave Abhi then she help her in killing Pragya, Simonica agrees.
As planned, Simonica's guard calls Pragya and tells her about Simonica's location. Before leaving, Pragya seeks Dadi's permission and blessing to go after her. Before heading to the factory, Pragya goes to a local police station to take the police with her. Dadi, fearing for Pragya's safety, reaches the factory alone before Pragya to confront Simonica. A struggle breaks out which results in Simonika shooting Dadi just as Pragya arrives with the police. Simonika is arrested and Dadi is rushed to the hospital with the rest of the Mehra family.
Despite their best efforts, Dadi succumbs to her injury and dies. Just as Aliya holds Pragya responsible for this tragedy, Abhi without hesitation blames Pragya not only for Dadi's death, but also for all the dangers that their family encountered. In his anger, Abhi calls Pragya inauspicious and throws her out of his life. A devastated and grief-stricken Pragya is shown attempting suicide by jumping off a cliff.
7 years later
The Mehra family now reside in New Delhi, but the entire dynamic of the family has changed. Abhi is married to Tanu, Aliya manages Abhi's career and business assets, and Purab and Disha have a son named Sunny. Dasi has taken the post of head of the family after Dadi's death. Despite them being married to one another, Abhi and Tanu share no husband-wife relationship whatsoever and even sleep in separate bedrooms. Aliya and Tanu's friendship for whatever reason mysteriously ended, with the former not accepting the later as her sister-in-law. Abhi turned his musical career into more of a business and Tanu is preparing for a comeback in her modeling career by entering an upcoming Mrs. India beauty pageant. Although the rest of the family (except Aliya and Tanu) miss Pragya dearly, Abhi still bitterly hates her for Dadi's death while struggling to suppress his love towards her.
Meanwhile, Pragya survived her suicide attempt and now resides in the U.K. She is the manager of King Singh, a London-based rapper and has a daughter named Kiara. Although Abhi is Kiara's biological father, King has named himself Kiara's legal father and loves her as if she is his own, and Abhi has no idea Pragya has given birth to his daughter. The three of them live together in the same house, but King and Pragya are not married and she only claims to be so in order to get King out of bad situations (like getting thrown in jail). It is unknown when King and Pragya met and under what circumstances, but they both show a mutual friendship towards one another.
While Pragya has taken Abhi's words to heart and still feels responsible for Dadi's death, King constantly tells her to let go of the "Mumbai-wala" guy and the injustices she suffered through because of him.
Abhi in Delhi and King in London both receive a contract to work on a world music album from a Delhi-based organizer. Believing she is the reason for his success, King asks Pragya to accompany him to Delhi and bring Kiara with her. Although hesitant at first, Pragya agrees thinking that she will not run into Abhi, completely oblivious to the fact that the Mehra family now lives in Delhi. On the flip side, Abhi's Swarni Dadi informs the Mehra family that she is going to be staying with them for a while and asks Abhi to come pick her up from the airport, coincidentally on the same day King, Pragya, and Kiara land in Delhi. At the airport, Abhi and Pragya feel each other's presence for the first time in seven years but do not come face-to-face. Abhi also has his first run-in with Kiara and feels an instant connection to her due to her personality resembling Pragya's, and Kiara on the other hand thinks Abhi is very arrogant and full of himself.
After checking into their hotel, King and Pragya decide to get Kiara enrolled in an international school, which coincidentally ends up being the same school that Sunny attends.

This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. The specific problem is: Per WP:TVCAST, we care about Main and Recurring cast. Cast members who have left the series should be included in the Main and Recurring cast sections. Cast members do not suddenly lose our academic interest merely because they've left the series. Please incorporate the following back into the above sections. Consider that if the series was cancelled, everybody would become "former cast". (August 2018) |

Production
Development and premiere
The series is a love story[12] produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under the banner Balaji Telefilms that airs on Zee TV. The show premiered at 09:00 pm (IST) on Tuesday on April 15, 2014 and airs episodes from Monday to Friday. Ekta Kapoor considers the letter K to be lucky and has named many of her productions starting with K.[13] Talking about introducing a fresh concept on primetime, Zee TV Programming Head, Namit Sharma said, "It takes one epic show to replace another, so you can imagine. It is a passionate drama of love, a far cry from regular saas-bahu soaps and has an ensemble cast of some very talented actors."[14] Ekta Kapoor from Balaji Telefilms added, "While two of my shows (Pavitra Rishta and Jodha Akbar) are already on-air and doing immensely well on Zee TV, it's a pleasure to extend my partnership with Zee to a third show. Pavitra Rishta has had a run of over five years now and the journey has been most gratifying for me as a producer. While the audiences who are hooked on to Pavitra Rishta will continue to enjoy the show at 6:30 PM, Kumkum Bhagya will open at 9 PM, drawing maximum eyeballs. It is so contemporary in its treatment that viewers will be able to instantly spot characters out of their own lives in the show. It's a story of passionate love that anyone with a soul would be able to easily relate to."[14]
Speaking of his comeback as an actor, Shabbir Ahluwalia, the protagonist of the show says, "With me producing shows, it was getting very difficult to manage time for acting assignments. But now, I have decided to concentrate on acting. You cannot be away from what you love doing for long. The role appealed to me a great deal. This is the first time that I will be playing a rockstar on television and in order to look my part, I had to ensure that I did not just get my costume and look right, but also get that attitude right that is required to portray a rockstar onscreen."[14]
Casting
Shabbir Ahluwalia,[15] who was also cast in Ekta's TV Series Kayamath, was selected to portray the lead role of Abhishek Prem Mehra. Ahluwalia made his comeback after Zee 20 Cricket League. Actress Sriti Jha landed in lead role in the show .[15] Mrunal Thakur was selected to portray the second leading role of Bulbul[16] while Arjit Taneja was cast opposite her.[16][17] In May 2014, Shikha Singh entered the show as the main antagonist Aliya Mehra,[17][18][19] while Madhurima Tuli was cast to portray the negative role of Tanu. Later, Tuli had to shoot for her film Baby so, this role was later played by Leena Jumani in September 2014.[11] Actor Faisal Rashid was selected to portray the role of Suresh (Pragya's fiancé) who played an important role in April–May 2014, but in May 2015 he quit the series.[20] Actress Supriya Shukla was cast to play the role of Sarla Arora, while Madhu Raja played the role of Daljeet Arora. Other supporting cast members include Samiksha Bhatnagar, Ankit Mohan, Charu Mehra and Amit Dhawan. Bhatnagar, who portrayed the supporting role of Mitali was replaced by Swati Anand within the month of launch while Anurag Sharma, who also appeared in Ekta Kapoor's Pavitra Rishta, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar replaced Amit. In 2015, Neel Motawani (who was also cast in other shows of Ekta) was selected to play the negative role of Neel; while in June 2015 Nikhil Arya entered the series playing the role of main male antagonist Nikhil Sood.[21]
In December 2015, actress Mrunal Thakur who played the role of Bulbul opted out from the show and was to be replaced by Kajol Shrivastava, however the character of Bulbul was phased out of the series after Mrunal's departure. In August 2016, Ankit Mohan quit the show so his character left as well. In September 2016, Arjit Taneja quit the show and was replaced by Vin Rana. In October 2016, Nikhil Arya was replaced by Rujut Dahiya.[22] In July 2017, actress Ruchi Savarn entered the show as Purab's new love interest.

Spin-off
Kundali Bhagya
Main Article: Kundali Bhagya
After the Success of Kumkum Bhagya which has been ruling the TRPs eversince its launch, Ekta Kapoor now brings a spinoff of the show[97]. At the launchof Kundali Bhagya Ekta Kapoor revealed the reason behind the Spin-off "The beauty of Kumkum Bhagya was that it gave a lot of young was that it gave a lot of young girls a chance to believe that simplicity is beautiful and a destiny is out there for there for them which they will ultimately find. Somewhere when the story moved forward, there was kidnapping, murder and drama. But the simplicity is still there. And I felt that something was always missing. That’s how we came up with Kundali Bhagya," said Ekta Kapoor.[98]
Kundali Bhagya narrates the story of Pragya's long-lost sisters Preeta (Shraddha Arya) and Srishti (Anjum Fakih) and their attempt to find their mother, Sarla (Supriya Shukla), and the dynamics which lead to their acquaintance with the rich and famous "Luthra" family. The show has consistently topped the ratings chart since its inception.[99]
