Mamangam is a 2019 Indian Malayalam historical period drama film directed by M. Padmakumar.[2] Sajeev Pillai was the director in the first schedule but was replaced by M. Padmakumar.[3] The film is about historical Mamankam festival of the 18th century in the banks of the Bharathappuzha at Thirunavaya, in the Malabar region.[4][5] The film follows the story of warriors known as Chaaverukkal, who plots a plan, to overthrow the Zamorin rulers. It stars Mammootty and Prachi Tehlan.[6] The music is composed by M. Jayachandran.[7][8]The film originally shot in Malayalam, will have simultaneous dubbed releases in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.[9][10][11]

It is based on medieval Mamankam festival celebrated during the 18th century on the banks of the Bharathappuzha, where warriors known as Chaaverukal plots against the Zamorin rulers to overthrow them.[12]

Development

Mamangam was originally planned by director Sajeev Pillai who has written the script after 12 years of research, which is based on Mamankam festival that was celebrated during the 17th century, which feature Mammootty in the role of a warrior.[13] The makers got permission from Navodaya to reuse the title of their 1979 film.[14][15]

Neeraj Madhav and Dhruvan was roped in to play important roles. Later Dhruvan was replaced by Unni Mukundan who play Chandroth Paniker.[16] Prachi Tehlan, Anu Sithara and hindi film actress Pranchi Desai was roped in to play the female lead roles.[17][18] Achuthan who is trained Kalaripayattu was roped in to play Chandrathil Chanthunni Menon, a 15-year kid who is the youngest fighter in the history of Mamankam.[19] Kaniha, Iniya, Siddique, Sudev Nair, Suresh krishna and Manikkuttan were also roped in to play pivotal characters.[20][21][22] Tarun Arora made his Malayalam cinema debut with the film.[23] On 29 January 2019, it was confirmed that M. Padmakumar will replace Sajeev Pillai as the director.[24] The producer announced that Padmakumar will be assisted by some of the renowned technicians in completing the movie. Cinematographer Manoj Pillai replaced cinematographer Ganesh.[25][26]

The film showcases the martial art of Kalaripayattu[27] and the actors have undergone training for Kalaripayattu and horse riding.[28][29] The actors including Mammootty, Unni Mukundan and Manikuttan have undergone physical transformation for the film.[30][31][32][33] Sham Kaushal is the action choreographer.[34][35]

Filming

Principal photography began in February 2018 at Mangalapuram and completed the first schedule in the same month.[36] After M. Padmakumar was roped in as the director in January 2019, the film shooting restarted from scratch.[37] The sets are created in an 18-acres of plot in Maradu where the old era is recreated was erected by close to thousand labourers and cost around 5 crores.[38] The war sequence of the film were shot in 20 acre land in Nettoor, which was built by around 2000 workers and costing 10 crore was constructed with 10 tonnes of steel and 2000 cubic metre of wood. Big sets were erected.[39][40][41][42]

As of May 10, 2019, the film completed 80 days of the planned 120-day shoot.[43] The climax sequence was shot in over 40 days. During the final days of production in Nettoor, there were scenes that had nearly 3000 artistes, dozens of elephants and horses.[44][40] The film was completed in 4-5 schedules in different locations and on different sets.[45]

The soundtrack is composed by M. Jayachandran,[46] while the score is composed by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara.[47]

Release

Marketing

The first look poster of the Mamangam was released on 8 June 2019.[48][49] For the first look poster of the movie, whole set was created and the actors enacted a whole scene was clicked by technicians, using the high-speed sync technology to get the epic snaps.[50] On 27 July 2019, the first look poster of Prachi Tehlan from the film was released.[51] Graphical teaser of the film was released on 10 September 2019.[52][53][54]
