Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters (born August 15 1938), United States politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991, representing the 35th District of California (map). She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, was educated at California State University, Los Angeles, and was a teacher and a volunteer coordinator in the Head Start program before entering the House. She is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Her husband, Sidney Williams, is a former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas.

Waters is well-known nationwide as a powerful advocate for the interests of African-Americans and impoverished persons of all races.
