Oladele Awobuluyi

Oladele Awobuluyi (1937-) is a Nigerian linguist, professor, and author. Dr. Awobuluyi's area of research focus is African Languages, in particular Yoruba, as well as Kanuri and Edo.

Dr. Awobuluyi founded the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages at the University of Ilorin in 1976, and served as the department's first head from 1979 until September, 1984.

10/02 Informal peer review of Tense-aspect-mood

Lead section

The lead section successfully conveys the importance of the topic—specifically why it is necessary to identify a broad category that encompasses tense, aspect, mood/modality, etc. The lead section describes the problem of distinguishing between the three features and briefly mentions some examples (the perfect tense in Greek and the simple conditional in Spanish) in which the distinction between markers for tense and mood or between those for mood and aspect is murky. The lead section concludes with an illustration the theoretical ideal, i.e.: separate inflectional markers for tense, aspect, and mood.

Structure

The sections are not organized in any intentional order that I can determine. After the lead section, the article outlines TAM representations in Creoles, Modern Greek, Romance Languages, Germanic Languages, Basque, and Hawaiian. Some of the section headings are language types, others are language families, others are single languages. The ordering and selection of these sections is not logical (as far as I can tell,) nor is it explained.

Balance of coverage

The subsection of the article dedicated to Germanic languages is longer than the other sections, and with in Germanic languages, the section dedicated to English is much longer and more detailed than the sections dedicated to other languages. Presumably, this imbalance resulted from the authors' familiarity with English grammar. Despite what appears to be unintentional bias, however, the article does not attempt to persuade or prioritize any particular viewpoint.

Neutrality

The article does not attempt to persuade readers, nor does it use any words or phrases that are obviously non-neutral, like "best," "better," "some people say," etc.

Source reliability

The article relies on a variety of sources from different authors.

Other notes

The article doesn't mention reality status as a potential additional feature of TAM, though it mentions evidentiality and mirativity.
