Pokiri (Telugu: పోకిరి) is a 2006 Telugu movie directed, written, and produced by Puri Jagannadh. Mahesh Babu plays the lead role while Ileana D'Cruz, Prakash Raj, Sayaji Shinde, and Ashish Vidyarthi play other roles. Mani Sharma gave music score, Shyam K. Naidu camera , and editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh. The film released on April 28, 2006.

The film was premiered at the 2006 International Indian Film Academy Awards, along with Tollywood super-hit Tagore.[1] This film created many records and is currently the highest grossing film in South Indian Film including the Telugu Film Industry. Pokiri is the highest grossing film ever, with a net domestic gross of 66.5 crores. world wide gross of 85 crores approx--Ssdssd (talk) 11:02, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[citation needed] It Is still running in Bhageeratha theatre In Kurnool. It recently completed 560 days of run, another record. [2]

Plot

Pandu (Mahesh Babu) is a mafia hench man who will kill anyone and anywhere for money. In his visit to his uncles aerobic center he meets Sruthi (Ileana D'Cruz) he gets attracted to her, Both meet each other several times coincidentally such as on the train, in the market, and even stuck in the elevator together. Soon, he falls in love with Sruthi (Ileana D'Cruz). Sruthi starts to like Pandu, but she was hesitant to express her love towards him.

Just when Sruthi confesses her love to Pandu, a bunch of mafia goons attack Pandu. But Pandu is able to kill all of them, and in front of Sruthi's eyes. Sruthi has never known that Pandu was working for a mafia gang, and is terrified.

Pandu becomes a part of the gang headed by Ali Bhai (Prakash Raj), a Dubai based don. Ali Bhai wants to kill a minister in public by using a bomb blast, but Pandu refuses as it will cause many innocent deaths. As they are discussing and arguing, the police come and arrest Ali Bhai, who has been wanted for long.

Ali Bhai’s rowdies kidnap the senior police officer's daughter. Blackmailing him with the same, Ali Bhai comes out from prison. After coming from jail, Ali Bhai comes to know that somebody from his group is a police officer.

Not knowing who this is in his gang, he finds out the name of his father and goes there hoping to kill the snitch. He kills a man there believing him to be Krishna Manohar, but soon finds out that the man was only the police officer's step-brother. To find the true identity of the police officer, he kills his father (played by Nasser).

As the news spreads as to his father's death, the police vehicles arrive and out steps Pandu, whose true identity is Krishna Manohar. All along, he was an undercover cop. Krishna Manohar goes to Ali Bhai's hideout, and after a gripping climax, kills him and his gang.

The film has six songs composed by Mani Sharma. The music was launched on March 30, 2006 and was released in stores on April 6, 2006.

Box Office

In its first week of release, Pokiri grossed a share of 9.11 crores.[4] In the US, the film grossed $200,000 USD in the first two weeks [5] and grossed $350,000 by June 2006.[6] Pokiri grossed a total amount of about $500,000 at the US box office.The film completed 50 days in 299 centers[7] and all the shows were housed full, grossing a share of 30 crores.[8] Even after running after 100 days in 219 centers, Pokiri was number one at box office. Pokiri had a 175 day run in 63 centres.[9].
