The Godecharle prize or the Godecharle contest - also called - Prix Godecharle - was a scholarship for arts students granted by the Godecharle Foundation to belgian artists jounger than 35 years old or members of a country of the European Community but living in Belgium since five years at least.
The Godecharle Foundation was established on 15th of March 1871 by Napoléon Godecharle (1803-1875), who wished, in remembrance of his father, to promote the learning and the career of three categories of young belgian artists being the sculptors, the painters and the architects.
To that perpose, the Godecharle foundation organizes a contest better-known under its French name, the Prix Godecharle, in Dutch , de Godecharleprijs.
The reputation of this contest is based on the value of a number of its award winners, whose some are internationnaly recognized, like Pierre Alechinsky, Emile Claus, Paul Delvaux, Éliane de Meuse, Léon Frédéric, Victor Horta, Fernand Khnopff or … Constant Permeke.
The contest
The first contest was organized in 1881. At the start, the competition was organized all the three years on the occasion of the Salons triennaux des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles in Belgium. During the First World War, the contest was adjourned until the 1921. Since 1933, it happens all the two years.
The laureates win a prize-money fixed to 5 000 euros they received in two parts on two years.
According to its founder’s wishes, the winners have to spend this prize-money for travelling abroad in order to improve their education or to conduct some research, traditionally in Italy, the ceaseless return to Renaissance sources.
The administration of the Godecharle Foundation is entrusted to the care of a special committee called Commission provinciale des Fondations de bourses d’études du Brabant. This committee also manages the organisation of the biennial contests and their participating work's exhibitions.
The principal characteristic of these contests is based on the fact that the young talented persons, theoretically unknown before that award, were suddenly recognized by a panel of experts always made up of famous renowned artists.
The jury
The Godecharle bursaries are given by this special committee, on proposal made up by a jury of renowned artists.
The most famous painters, sculptors and architects of these last hundred years have accepted to be a part of the jury of the Concours Godecharle. [1]
Among the panels of judges, we can list: Pierre Alechinsky, Léon Frédéric, Fernand Khnopff, Jean Brusselmans, Constant Permeke, Paul Delvaux, Louis Van Lint, Victor Bourgeois and so on.
An event in the story of the contest happened in 1921, when a woman won the Prix Godecharle for the first time.
Éliane de Meuse was only twenty-two years old. [2]
The awarding panel comprised Alberto Ciamberlani, Armand Rassenfosse and Emile Claus, one of the most important figure of the Luminism.
