Sohaib Athar (born 1977 April 8) is a Pakistani resident of Abbottabad who provided the first public information about the killing of Osama Bin Laden on 2011 May 2.[1]
Without at first realizing what he was reporting,[2] Sohaib Athar sent the information via Twitter.[3]
He soon found himself deluged by media requests, even while United States President Barack Obama was on television to confirm that DEVGRU commandos had conducted the lethal raid on the Abbottabad compound identified as Bin Laden's hideout.[4]
Sohaib Athar is a computer software IT consultant.[5] He holds both a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physics from Forman Christian College and a master of science from University of the Punjab, both in Lahore, Pakistan.[6] His web site has occasionally sought to analyze terrorism. Sohaib is married and has a son Harris Suhayb (born in 2003). Sohaib also owns a coffee shop named Coffity, which is the first ever coffee shop in Abbottabad that sells freshly brewed coffee.[7]
Sohaib Athar had moved to Abbottabad from Lahore in 2010 after a car accident had injured his family and they decided to move away from the crowded city to quieter environs.[8] "There goes the neighborhood" was his first reaction on learning the worldwide significance of the events he had witnessed.[9]
