South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's key universities operating under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education. The university, which has a total area of 294 hectares, is situated in Guangzhou, a southern metropolitan in China. The university has two campuses: The Wushan Campus and Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center Campus.

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a key and comprehensive research-oriented university under “Project 985” and “Project 211”. It bears outstanding scientific research capacity with 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, 15 Chang Jiang Scholars and 24 receivers of the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. It has 1,843 graduate instructors, including 654 doctoral supervisors.
Since 1978, SCUT has undertaken over 30,000 scientific research projects, of which 25 are sponsored by National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 75 by Project 973, 164 by Project 863 while 84 titled as Key Programs of National Natural Science Fund and 2,000 as General Programs of National Natural Science Fund, with a total amount of nearly 65 billion RMB among these projects. In addition, it has been awarded 743 prizes at provincial level or above, including 57 national awards and 103 provincial or ministerial first prizes. Meanwhile, 21,856 papers have been published on SCIE, EI and ISTP (by the end of 2011). The University has 3,123 authorized patents, of which 1,973 are invention patents. SCUT has been ranking the top ten among domestic universities and colleges in terms of patent application number and patent authorization number for about 10 years.
The University has established a number of high level scientific research bases with remarkable research capacity, including 8 national key laboratories and engineering research centers, 4 national engineering research centers cooperating with enterprises, 11 key laboratories and engineering research centers sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 24 provincial key laboratories and engineering research centers, and 10 provincial research bases for philosophy and social sciences.

With precise knowledge pursuit, the school eminent spirit of comity and factualism has come into being, which help cultivating exclusive technological and management talents that are welcomed to the society. In recent years, the demand of graduate students has exceeded their supply. The employment rate of its undergraduates in 2011 has reached 99.10% and that of its graduates 99.10%. Since its founding, the university has cultivated for the country over 260,000 graduates at all levels. A large number of school fellows have become technological mainstays, distinguished entrepreneurs or leading cadres.

In 1981, it was authorized by the State Council to confer doctor degrees and master degrees, and was among the first universities in the country to do so. In 1995, it was selected as one of the universities into which China will make significant investment in the 21st century. In 1999, it was rated "excellent" during the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment, and was among the first "Excellent Universities of Undergraduate Education" in the country. In the same year, a national science park was established with the authorization of State Ministry of Technology and State Ministry of Education. In 2000, Graduate School was authorized to be established. In 2001, the new cooperative construction of State Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province was implemented in SCUT and it was listed among the top universities in the country. ==Basic laboratories and facilities==
The number of experimental teaching demonstration centers in the South China University of Technology has reached eight, one of which is the national teaching demonstration experimental center, while the other two are the provincial demonstration centers. Twenty-eight professional teaching laboratories function well in our university. Besides, we are in possession of seventeen key research laboratories of Ministry of Education and six Guangdong key laboratories as well. Ocuppying an area of 347,690 square meters in total, all laboratories in our university have 357 full-time laboratory technicians and experimentalists, 168,7000 pieces of educational teaching and researching equipment, whose financial values are equal to 1,417 billion. From 1996, the first year of carrying the the Ninth 5-year Plan to now, supported by the Project 211 (Chinese government’s endeavor with the purpose of strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century) and the Project 985 (Chinese educational development strategy to construct first-grade universities in the world and batches of world famous high quality researching universities), and other multi-channel funds raised by ourselves, we, adhering to the spirit of taking the whole situation into consideration, with step-by-step implement, and unremitting endeavor over a long period of time, have established not quite few laboratories, which take the leading position within the scope of whole nation.


In recent years, based on our development strategy: "talents strengthen the university, openness activates the university, and culture prospers the university", the project of constructing laboratories has merged into the mainstream of the elite college reforms and development with the aim of becoming the first grade within the nation and famous to outside world. South China University of Technology (SCUT; simplified Chinese: 华南理工大学; traditional Chinese: 華南理工大學; pinyin: Huánán Lǐgōng Dàxué) is a Chinese university located in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, China.

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's key universities operating under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education. The university, which has a total area of 294 hectares, is situated in Guangzhou, a southern metropolitan in China. The university has two campuses: The Wushan Campus and Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center Campus.

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a key and comprehensive research-oriented university under “Project 985” and “Project 211”. It bears outstanding scientific research capacity with 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, 15 Chang Jiang Scholars and 24 receivers of the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. It has 1,843 graduate instructors, including 654 doctoral supervisors.

Since 1978, SCUT has undertaken over 30,000 scientific research projects, of which 25 are sponsored by National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 75 by Project 973, 164 by Project 863 while 84 titled as Key Programs of National Natural Science Fund and 2,000 as General Programs of National Natural Science Fund, with a total amount of nearly 65 billion RMB among these projects. In addition, it has been awarded 743 prizes at provincial level or above, including 57 national awards and 103 provincial or ministerial first prizes. Meanwhile, 21,856 papers have been published on SCIE, EI and ISTP (by the end of 2011). The University has 3,123 authorized patents, of which 1,973 are invention patents. SCUT has been ranking the top ten among domestic universities and colleges in terms of patent application number and patent authorization number for about 10 years.

The University has established a number of high level scientific research bases with remarkable research capacity, including 8 national key laboratories and engineering research centers, 4 national engineering research centers cooperating with enterprises, 11 key laboratories and engineering research centers sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 24 provincial key laboratories and engineering research centers, and 10 provincial research bases for philosophy and social sciences.


With precise knowledge pursuit, the school eminent spirit of comity and factualism has come into being, which help cultivating exclusive technological and management talents that are welcomed to the society. In recent years, the demand of graduate students has exceeded their supply. The employment rate of its undergraduates in 2011 has reached 99.10% and that of its graduates 99.10%. Since its founding, the university has cultivated for the country over 260,000 graduates at all levels. A large number of school fellows have become technological mainstays, distinguished entrepreneurs or leading cadres.

Facing the new century, SCUT will take discipline constructions as pre-requisite, regard individual as its roots, consider talent cultivation as its ultimate aim and highlight technological pursuit. SCUT intends to enlarge and extend its scale and realize the coordinated development of its scale, structure, quality and benefit. SCUT accelerates its education reform by gearing the university from multidiscipline-oriented to integration-oriented, from teaching research-oriented to research-oriented, and from partial open form to completely open form, so as to build SCUT into a top-ranking State university and a famous world-class university.[1]

South China University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education , is also included in the University National 211 Project and 985 Project.

In 2000, SCUT ranked 34th among Asia's Best Universities for Science and Technology Schools by Asiaweek.[2]

2012 , 2013 , world-class research center at the University of Shanghai Jiaotong University, published online in the " Academic Ranking of World Universities " in the South China University of Technology into the world top 500 ( 400-450 range ) , where engineering and chemistry into the world university rankings former Top 150 ( 101-150 range ) . 2013 , published by the University of Leiden in the Netherlands World University Rankings ranked 136th in the world , South China University of Technology , Asia's first 10 universities in mainland China 4 .[3]

History

Formerly known as the South China Institute of Technology, it was established in 1952, through a reorganization process that unified the engineering schools and departments of major universities from five provinces in central and Southern China, including the former Zhongshan University, Lingnan University, Hunan University, Guangxi University, South China Joint University, and four others. In 1960, it was selected as one of 33 National Key Universities, under the direct administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The University was renamed as South China University of Technology in 1988.

In 1981, it was authorized by the State Council to confer doctor degrees and master degrees, and was among the first universities in the country to do so. In 1995, it was selected as one of the universities into which China will make significant investment in the 21st century. In 1999, it was rated "excellent" during the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment, and was among the first "Excellent Universities of Undergraduate Education" in the country. In the same year, a national science park was established with the authorization of State Ministry of Technology and State Ministry of Education. In 2000, Graduate School was authorized to be established. In 2001, the new cooperative construction of State Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province was implemented in SCUT and it was listed among the top universities in the country. After 60 years of development, SCUT has become a multidisciplinary university focusing on engineering, combined with science, also promoting well coordinated development of management, economics, humanities and law.

Among the prominent professors currently teaching at the university is He Jingtang, designer of the acclaimed China Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

  • Note: The “New Century National 100, 1000 and 10,000 Talents Project” is a project formulated in accordance with the country’s development of science and technology as well as that of economy and society so as to reinforce the talents training in the new century. Basic laboratories and facilities

The number of experimental teaching demonstration centers in the South China University of Technology has reached eight, one of which is the national teaching demonstration experimental center, while the other two are the provincial demonstration centers. Twenty-eight professional teaching laboratories function well in our university. Besides, we are in possession of seventeen key research laboratories of Ministry of Education and six Guangdong key laboratories as well. Ocuppying an area of 347,690 square meters in total, all laboratories in our university have 357 full-time laboratory technicians and experimentalists, 168,7000 pieces of educational teaching and researching equipment, whose financial values are equal to 1,417 billion. From 1996, the first year of carrying the the Ninth 5-year Plan to now, supported by the Project 211 (Chinese government’s endeavor with the purpose of strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century) and the Project 985 (Chinese educational development strategy to construct first-grade universities in the world and batches of world famous high quality researching universities), and other multi-channel funds raised by ourselves, we, adhering to the spirit of taking the whole situation into consideration, with step-by-step implement, and unremitting endeavor over a long period of time, have established not quite few laboratories, which take the leading position within the scope of whole nation.


In recent years, based on our development strategy: "talents strengthen the university, openness activates the university, and culture prospers the university", the project of constructing laboratories has merged into the mainstream of the elite college reforms and development with the aim of becoming the first grade within the nation and famous to outside world.
