Coat of arms
What does the inscription on the coat of arms ("Ushauri kwa Uaminifu") mean in English? Josh (talk) 04:20, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

City Meaning
Nairobi means City in the sun
: Well, no, although it is (was?) a slogan for the city. An alternative slogan is "city in the slum", since more than a third of the population live in a slum (according to BBC News, at least). &mdash; Matt <small>Crypto</small> 23:38, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Nairobi means "Place of Cool Waters" in Masaai because it was a swamp. The label given to Nairobi was "Green City in the Sun".

City History
Was the city actually cited because it was above the 'malaria' altituded? The way this information is presented makes me think someone added it to give Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" some kudos. Does anyone actually know whether this fact is true? 210.54.0.101 22:54, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

:That's correct. The builders of the Lunatic Express selected Nairobi as a station because of the source of clean water and the altitude above the mosquito line. Mandingoesque (talk) 15:20, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

::No, it's not true. Malaria extended all the way up to 2500m, and the mosquitoes were observed as high as 3000m. Nairobi is a mere 1680m up. As a result, malaria was always a serious problem in Nairobi. -- Zsero (talk) 00:38, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

::: At the time the temperatures were too cool for anopheles. The situation now is different 21:53, 9 September 2010 (UTC) <small><span class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by Mandingoesque (talk • contribs) </span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
Not really.Nyeri and Karatina areas in Central Province rarely have any Malaria cases. Karatina especially only gets Malaria when someone brings it from a Malaria zone and even then cases rarely exceed 500 in a year. My rural home happens to be there and we have never used Mosquito nets.Ever Nyeri is around the same altitude as Nairobi. The Eastern Highlands are protected from the major malaria zone(Coastal Kenya) by the dry Nyika which at times is too dry for Mosquitoes to breed and w the Cold season in July kills off the Mosquitoes that do breed in the Wet season leaving the Eastern Highlands mostly Mosquito an Malaria free for most of the Year. Today, nearly every Malaria case in Nairobi occurs mainly in the Lower Eastern part of the City and rarely in the higher Western part<small><span class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by GERALD710 (talk • contribs) 22:33, 13 October 2014 (UTC)</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

What is the correct derivation of Nairobi?
The original article said it comes from Ewaso Nyirobi, on Oct 20 2004, anon 209.211.56.200, changed that to Enkarenairobi. I've changed it back because I'm dubious of this. Can anyone verify which is correct? Paul August &#9742; 02:41, August 25, 2005 (UTC)
: Encyclopedia Britannica Online says:
:: ...taking its name from a water hole known to the Masai people as Enkare Nairobi ("Cold Water").
: There's some websites that use "Ewaso Nyirobi", and some that use "Enkare Nairobi". I wonder where the variant comes from? I'd be inclined to go with the EB version, at least for now. &mdash; &mdash; Matt <small>Crypto</small> 08:58, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Changes by mkimemia
Hi, I have added bulk to the Nairobi section, changing the two paragraphs into several subsections.

I have also added an info-box.

Urban national parks: compare and contrast
> "Nairobi ... does have several tourist attractions. The most famous is the Nairobi National Park. It is the only national park to border a capital city, or city of this size."

> Tijuca Forest: "The Tijuca Forest (Floresta da Tijuca in Portuguese) is a mountainous hand-planted rainforest in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the world's largest urban forest, covering some 32 km². ... In 1961, Tijuca Forest was declared a National Park."

> Population of Nairobi: 2,500,000<br>
> Population of Rio de Janeiro: 6,023,699

> "Nairobi National Park is 117 km² but is only a few km from the centre of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

The park is unique in being a protected game reserve within the boundaries of a major city."

There are few other capital cities which border a capital city but all of them seem to claim to be the only one ;-)

check this out:

http://www.staff.amu.edu.pl/~zbzw/ph/pnp/kamp.htm:

"Kampinoski National Park is located north-west of Warsaw, being the only national park which borders on a capital with over a million inhabitants. It is also one of the largest national parks of the European lowland, which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Bug River. The Park was founded on January 19, 1959 in order to protect the remnants of the Kampinos Forest in the old valley of the Vistula River. The current Park area is 36,533 ha, of which 15 % is under strict protection. "

Pollution
Is pollution a problem in this large developing city? -- Beland 04:15, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Pollution isn't a large problem in Nairobi, as it is in other fast-developing cities. Nairobi is not situated in a valley or bowl, and the city usually has steady winds that blow away pollution, so smog is not a problem. Mkimemia 20:56, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Elevation
Is Nairobi situated at 1660 metres, as stated in the Geography section, or at 1860 metres, as stated in the Climate section? Jbgilm 05:43, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

At Nairobi Railway Station, the plaque reads: Nairobi - 5453ft (above sea level) Mkimemia 19:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I think it would be helpful to square the three elevation figures in the article - Geography, Climate and then the summary box on the right. All three have quite widely different figures.

Making Nairobi an A-Class Article
2. Remove px sizing and left placement tags from images - Done Sunday 10th June 2007
3. Implement WP:CITET templates to properly format references.

5. Consider finding a better skyline picture for the infobox.

Urbanization?
"Crime had risen in Nairobi as a result of urbanization" - this should be substantiated in some way, or the person/s or groups who assert this point should be quoted, as this is a highly simplified and generalised statement which cannot be quantified in such simple terms.

IPA transcription
Is the IPA transcription correct? Isn't the correct IPA just "Nairobi" or have I been pronouncing the name of the city wrong my whole life? -67.85.180.72 22:19, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

No because, for example, the letter 'i' dosent exist in recieved pronounciation. Mkimemia 07:22, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

:Well, it does. The RP pronunciation of 'sunny' is ['sʌni], for example. A strict RP rendering would be [nʌɪ'ɹəʊbi], but the Wikipedia convention for transcription of English is not to be so strict. A broad English transcription would be /naɪ'roʊbi/. It might also be good to have a Swahili transcription, as the other official language, and a Maasi one, as that's the origin of the name. Swahili, I understand, lacks diphthongs, so the English pronunciation can't be correct. No idea what the correct one would be, though. And no idea about Maasi, either. Anybody able to improve on this? My one edit has been to change the final 'ɪ' to 'i'. This is definitely correct. A short version of the sound in seek /siːk/, rather than the sound in sick sɪk. This is all discussed in, and supported by this page. --Che Gannarelli (talk) 17:02, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Population
The article currently says, "The growth rate of Nairobi is currently 4.1%.[58] It is estimated that Nairobi's population will reach 5 million in 2015.[59]"

The first of these links leads to the CIA page for Kenya, where the growth rate of Nairobi is not referenced. It does mention a rate of urbanisation for the whole country, but claims 4%, not 4.1%. It is likely that the 4.1% cited in the article was true in 2005 or 2006, but examination of the entire time series of census data shows the 2011 growth rate to be around 3.5%.

The second link is dead, and seems to refer to a newspaper article. For the city to go from its present 3.1 million to 5 million in 4 years would require an annual growth rate of 12.5%, which is at best implausible. The data clearly suggest that if present trends continue the city's population will not reach 5 million until 2025. I would recommend deleting these two sentences. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.169.131.14 (talk) 17:12, 27 January 2011 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Matatu
The article states, 'Matatu, which technically means, "three cents for a ride"'. This is incorrect. There is no reference to cents. Literally it means just "for three". The three refers to the most common regularly used coin when this form of transport began in the 1960s, which was the 10c coin. With Kenyan independence in 1963, no 1c coins were produced. So in fact it refers to 3 x 10c coins or 30c, not 3c. Ptilinopus (talk) 01:58, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Music
This section needs references and edits to be in accordance with POV guidelines.

Some information seems leading and biased:

Many nightclubs in and around the city have witnessed a growth in the population that exclusively listen to Electronic Dance Music, especially amongst the younger generations. These youth also support many local EDM producers & DJs, such as Jahawi, Mikhail Kuzi , Rikkaz , Lectronica Circle, Kumi and DJ UV.

Some doesn't seem useful as information under that section:

Many foreign musicians who tour Africa perform in Nairobi. Bob Marley's first-ever visit to Africa started in Nairobi. Acts that have performed in Nairobi include Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, Akon, Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder, Alaine, Ja Rule, and Morgan Heritage, and Cabo Snoop. Other international musicians who have performed in Nairobi include the rocking show by Don Carlos and the Elephant man crew.

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted.
Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia.
This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link.
If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting.
If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page.
If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta.
When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags.
The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true.

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add cbignore after the link to keep me from modifying it. == Clarification of Paragraph 'Districts and neigbourhoods' ==

Hey guys,

I have some troubles understanding the 'Districts and neighbourhoods' paragraph of this article.
First, it lists several constituencies ("Nairobi is divided into a series of constituencies. These constituencies are: Makadara, Kamukunji, Starehe, Langata, Dagoretti, Westlands, Kasarani, and Embakasi"), but this information is contradictive to the paragraph 'Political divisions' which lists 17 constituencies.

Furthermore, the paragraph lists some of the main 'administrative divisions' of Nairobi. Where are these divisions defined and what purpose do they serve? The source stated is an archived web page of Nairobi City Council, which--to my knowledge--does not exist anymore.

When I checked 'http://www.nairobi.go.ke', the only sub-entities to the City County of Nairobi were sub-counties, which match with the 17 political constituencies and the wards for County Assembly Election. Are the division mentioned in the paragraph still used for administration of the City County or are those divisions just used in peoples daily conversations. Clarification of the paragraph regarding the wording used (constituencies, divisions, locations, villages etc.) would be great.

Thx in advance
