'Temu is an American online marketplace, which was designed to enable more people to discover new experiences and enrich consumers lifestyles.[2][3][4] Temu, a sister company of one of the largest e-commerce platforms by number of users, was launched in September 2022 in the US.[5]They both belong to a Nasdaq listed company (Nasdaq:PDD).[6] PDD was listed on the Nasdaq since July 2018. Its market cap has reached above US$200 billion at one point.[7][8][9]

History and business model

Temu went live in September 2022 as temu.com and is initially available to consumers in the US.[10] According to media reports, "Temu was created with the goal to empower consumers", Temu bills itself as a new e-commerce player to bring a fresh approach to give consumers the products they seek at the best value possible from merchants around the world.[4]

The Temu site features products in multiple categories, including home and garden, men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories, beauty and health, electronics, kid’s fashion, shoes and bags, pet supplies, baby products, sports and outdoors, underwear and sleepwear, office and industrial products. [2][15] Temu uses technology and innovation in supply-chain and inventory management to curate a portfolio of products that appeal to consumers, regardless of their demographics or income.[16] This is enabled by tapping onto Pinduoduo’s vast network of merchants and manufacturers around the world.[17] [18]

The curation of products based on consumers interests and needs reduces mismatches in demand and supply, and thereby Temu could pass on the cost savings to consumers. Based on consumer needs, the platform can quickly adjust the sourcing of in-demand products to optimize inventory and production costs. The real-time curation and optimization of product mix contributes to the most competitive prices among its peers.[19]
