Firefox 4 Article

Hi,

I'm starting to become baffled by your edits to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_4#Data_loss_issue Earlier today you removed a phrase from Paragraph 4: ", against the desires of many community members". And who had edited the sentence to mention community members in the first place? You, a few days earlier!

So you changed the original, accurate phrase - ", against the advice of members of his development team" to a less accurate one, and then removed the less accurate one because it wasn't accurate! I don't think that's how the process is supposed to work.

The Developer Forum messages were, obviously, part of a thread - a long thread of 82 messages. The rest of the thread can easily be viewed by clicking the link at the top of each. The linking of individual messages is for the benefit of clarity for the reader. However, basic common sense dictates that an individual message has a context within the thread.

It would not add clarity to the article to cite the 82-message thread as a whole. But in terms of challenging the veracity of the citing, ignoring the thread as a whole is unhelpful. Most of the commenters in the thread are Mozilla developers, many of whom are on the payroll, and I can provide links on the Talk page if necessary verifying this. However, the original phrasing is both accurate and relevant, and the section - and its readers - are suffering by what is happening here.

Regarding Paragraph 2, 'informing' is less accurate than 'alerting', as developers already knew this was going to cause data loss: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592822#c5 Note that this comment is from November 2010. However, the change wasn't actually implemented until late in the process, and the developers did nothing to warn users who'd set their own home page in the four months following Alexander Limi's comment. 'Alerting' is more accurate because it indicates that members of the Firefox community were attempting to get the developers to deal with this massive data loss issue prior to final release.

If you develop a good understanding of the underlying issues in this admittedly complex subject and still feel similar edits are needed then fair enough.

Thanks,

RedactionalOne (talk) 10:34, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are being baffled because you are'nt looking into the edit histories thoroughly. I never edited the article to introduce the phrase "against the desires of many community members". Why dont you take a look here to see who edited that phrase. --Jovian Eye talk 14:23, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Does that mean you wouldn't have removed it if it had still referred to 'members of his development team'? Your previous edit was this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Firefox_4&diff=prev&oldid=420669243 Now according to the Wikipedia guidelines, editors shouldn't do that: "When you find a passage in an article that you find is biased or inaccurate, improve it if you can. If that is not easily possible, and you disagree with a point of view expressed in an article, don't just delete it. Rather, balance it with what you think is neutral." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution#Focus_on_content
Now other users are slashing paragraphs in the same way, and without justifying their actions. I suppose you don't have an issue with that because you were just doing the same thing a few days ago?
Here's the situation I find myself in: I've taken care (in my opinion) to favour neutrality over the clearest expression of the seriousness of this. Other users are then glancing at it, not really getting the implications - that this act is against the user and goes against the Mozilla spirit of a better, more open web experience - and slashing paragraphs without due concern for the processes in place.
As an experienced Wikipedian and anti-vandalism editor, aren't you supposed to advocate for best practice, and support my efforts against the 'click-happy'?
RedactionalOne (talk) 16:06, 29 March 2011 (UTC) ETA[reply]
When I first removed the content I did not delete it, rather I moved it to the talk page. This method of editing disputed material is sometimes done on certain pages and I think what I did was not incorrect. Rather I wanted to copy-edit the material and upon consensus add it back. But you keep doing WP:POVPUSH and barely agree to what others have to say. --Jovian Eye talk 16:41, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I haven't come across that method in the guidelines. Then again, there are quite a lot of guidelines.
Others have said very little - mainly they've done, ie deleted - without justification other than not thinking it's a big issue. As I pointed out on the Talk page, the article section doesn't (or should that be didn't) state that it was, so that seems irrelevant. As mentioned above, if they had an alternate view they should have, according to the guidelines, stated it, making their additions verifiable. At the very least, they should have done so on the Talk page.
Apparently, "calling someone a 'POV-pusher' is uncivil", and not endorsed. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:POVPUSH#POV_pushing
I'm disappointed with the conduct of my fellow Wikipedians to date. Your new comment on the Firefox 4 Talk page I guess cements your (unsubstantiated) opinion.
RedactionalOne (talk) 17:24, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It may be uncivil to call someone a POV-pusher but it is extremely uncivil to be engaged in POV-pushing. I feel this matter can be further discussed on Firefox 4 talk page so that other editors can also voice their opinions. --Jovian Eye talk 18:18, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

SVG Check tool

I just came across this SVG tool at commons:Commons:SVG_Check. You remember that weird glitch in the WP:NFCC image, where the WP wouldn't render properly? I'm wondering if this wouldn't have helped in some way. Just a thought, I don't really know how the tool works, I just saw it mentioned over at Commons. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 18:09, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for informing me about this tool. File:Kerala God's Own Country Logo.svg seems to be suffering from a similar problem. Can you try repeating the same steps in Illustrator? It might fix the issue. --Jovian Eye talk 19:01, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it won't work this time, unfortunately. In case it means anything to you, I got a warning that read: "Clipping will be lost on roundtrip to Tiny." Not sure what that means, but I thought I'd mention it. Unfortunately, none of my "resaving" worked; on my own computer, the font remains the same but at one point, it's weight changes to a slightly lighter version. But after uploading, it changes to a non-cursive script! ??? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 19:15, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity, I uploaded the file to the SVG Checker tool, and it returned:
Line 5: *Warning* It appears you have a trailing space in one of your attributes. With certain attributes, this can cause a rendering problem.
I don't know how to edit/save actual code. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 19:18, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I too did check the code through the tool and it gave 2 issues. What is even more surprising is the fact that it was taken from a PDF source. Anyways, I have managed to fix it through an automated tool which converts the SVG to bitmap version and then reconverts to vector. --Jovian Eye talk 19:43, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Frustrating perhaps, but at least it works : ) – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 19:53, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Hi Jovianeye - can you do a vector of the logo of the former airline Morris Air? Here's the version already uploaded here: File:MorrisAir1993-1logo.jpg, but I think just the "Morris Air" on [1] would look a bit better. Could also possibly qualify for PD-text at Commons (the icon is just a bunch of arrows in a circle; see File:Morris-737-EI-CHD.JPG), but I'm no expert. Thanks in advance. Connormah (talk) 03:44, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another image to help you - [2]. I hope this will be an easy one. Connormah (talk) 03:56, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can give this a shot. But, I will need a few days. --Jovian Eye talk 18:40, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that works for me. Take your time. Thanks, Connormah (talk) 19:45, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have given this a try. The results dont look very encouraging. I am going to place a request at the graphic lab. I have uploaded File:Morris Air Logo.svg on commons with whatever work I have done. --Jovian Eye talk 19:49, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt-an-Article

Thanks Jovianeye , for the interest in Adopt-an-article. Can you please help with new ideas to promote Adopt-an-article event ? --naveenpf (talk) 02:59, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Placing a banner at the top of WikiProject India page would be one suggestion. Another good idea would be to inform the editors of WP:POST since that would have high visibility. --Jovian Eye storm 12:35, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Fair use rationale for File:Indian_rupees.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Indian_rupees.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 11:27, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changing of the logo of The Park Hotels on the wiki page

Dear Jovianeye,

Firstly we would like to appreciate the great time and effort you have put in drafting this page for The Park Hotels. We see that most of our content is updated including our new brand promise of anything but ordinary

We have one request however, with our brand revitalization exercise that ended in March 2013, we have changed the brand logo. We have been trying to edit that but it is not possible from our end. Request you to kindly changed that for us. Our logo can be accessed from the link attached BELOW http://we.tl/6aJCo8BoVp

For any further queries I can be reached on pr.corp@theparkhotels.com

IIT alumnus

For whatever late night drunken reason I thought it interesting to say hello to the only other IIT alumni to rank on Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits. So hello Jovianeye and Krakatoa :) --Dkriegls (talk to me!) 07:02, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Photographer's Barnstar
Here's some well-deserved kudos for supplying such beautiful, elegant, and practical additions to the wiki through your excellent photographic skills. Noting a picture is worth a thousand words, you have added more "words" to our project than many of our most prolific writers. I came upon your work while perusing WP:FP for the first time in a while. I especially enjoyed your photo of the Jefferson Memorial. Thank you for making the Internet not suck. :) upstateNYer 06:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
