Some cookies to welcome you!
Welcome to Wikipedia, Fltyingpig! I am Gyrobo and have been editing Wikipedia for quite some time. Thank you for your contributions. I just wanted to say hi and welcome you to Wikipedia! If you have any questions check out Wikipedia:Questions, or feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or type {{helpme}} at the bottom of this page. I love to help new users, so don't be afraid to leave a message! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Also, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post. Again, welcome!

Moving pages

Regarding this edit, pasting material to GB (disambiguation) that had been cut from GB: This is not an acceptable way to move a page, because it separates the page from its edit history. For information about moving pages, please see Wikipedia:Moving a page. In any case, that disambiguation page should not have been moved, because it was already in the right place. Dab pages using the (disambiguation) clarifier are only used when a term has a primary topic, which GB does not.--ShelfSkewed Talk 17:07, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I know

I'm sorry! I realized that after I moved two pages like that, then fixed one, but I couldn't remember which the other one was and hoped someone else would find it. Thank you so much for doing so! pluma (talk) 21:26, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Wikipedia is huge, and even experienced editors don't know all the guidelines--I certainly don't. Welcome to the circus, and happy editing!--ShelfSkewed Talk 04:33, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Answers

Hi! In response to your questions on my user talk page:

  1. There is a large selection of userboxes available at Template:WP:UBS. All userboxes are templates, and are transcluded by putting the template name in double curly brackets. Something like {{User en}} will produce a userbox identifying you as a native English speaker.
  2. If you have images you own the copyright to, and you want to upload them under an open license, you'd want the Commons Upload form. If you want to upload a non-free, fair use image, you'd use the English Wikipedia's upload form. If you upload non-free content, you should be familiar with the restrictions on its use.
  3. WP:REDLINK describes the common practices surrounding links to articles that don't exist. In a nutshell, you should exercise common sense and only link nonexistent pages that are likely to become comprehensive articles at some point in the future. You were definitely heading in the right direction there.
  4. Talk page discussions tend to have newer posts at the bottom, and older ones at the top, and you may want to avoid indenting new lines. The MediaWiki software interprets leading spaces as preformatted text. Help:Wiki markup will give you a pretty good idea of how to format text on Wikipedia.

If you have any further questions, I'd be happy to help. --Gyrobo (talk) 22:08, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question about moving pages

Hi! Was there any consensus for your move of the PJ&O characters title to a combination of the series? Not that I disagree with the move, but I would have moved it to "List of characters in the Camp Half-Blood series" or something less complicated. PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:19, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I probably should have gotten consensus, but I figured that the series is not called the Camp Half-Blood series, and so I thought that no one would mind if I corrected the name. If you want, you can change it back, but you'd need to fix all the redirect pages, and there are about fifty of those. Sorry for the inconvenience! pluma (talk) 04:22, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do some research into a better name and see if there is any consensus. The pages needed to be moved; I don't question that, just the title choice, which I think could be simpler. Thanks for your work, especially on the PJ articles! PrincessofLlyr royal court 16:04, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What ideas do you have for a simpler title? I can't think of any that are shorter without sacrificing accuracy. pluma Ø 03:33, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The accepted combination is calling the two combined series the Camp Half-Blood series. For example, see Template:Camp Half-Blood. And that's simpler than running the two series titles together. PrincessofLlyr royal court 23:14, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My bad. I don't agree with that name, but if that's what's official, then feel free to change it back. Sorry! pluma Ø 23:42, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

adopt-a-typo

Dear Pig, I am Majestic PyreMy Speech Bubble . I have, so far, spearheaded the adopt-a-typo project. I noticed your comment, sugestting that it might be best to double up on typos. However, at least in my opinion, and I am as new to this as you, it seems that it will be more effective to entrust specific typos to specific users who then, after defeating the backlog, merely check periodically. I would, though, love more discussion about the subject. Please feel free to contact me on my talk page. Majestic PyreMy Speech Bubble 20:41, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! It was just an idea. It's just that I adopted a typo that has hundreds of uses on Wikipedia even though it's wrong. pluma Ø 20:45, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm..... Maybe I will put in a "nannies wanted" section where people with a particularly large typo backlog can request help with particularly typos? P.S. Thanks for the Barnstar :) It is my first of many I hope. Majestic PyreMy Speech Bubble 21:12, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
About the Barnstar: Don't mention it. A ton of people who deserve barnstars don't get them. I try to send WikiLove liberally. PS: the nanny thing is a great idea. pluma Ø 21:19, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you update Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/P with your adoption of the Philipines? Thanks. --Mirokado (talk) 00:35, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that yet. I'm going to go back and try again. pluma Ø 00:39, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I looked again, and I still can't figure it out. Could you help me? pluma Ø 00:42, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! All you need to do is add your normal talk signature as you did here to each entry in the list which you are adopting. You can see the result of that by looking at the entry for pheonix which I have adopted. --Mirokado (talk) 01:29, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't see any edit link for the entries' section. pluma Ø 01:37, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Har. Well, you can just edit the page and add your signature to the Philipines etc lines. --Mirokado (talk) 01:40, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I tried that yesterday and it didn't work, it only showed the top section. But I tried again today and it worked. I installed a program that has been messing thing up a bit because I have to allow everything now. But anyway, it's working now! Cheers and happy editing! pluma Ø 19:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for creating my user page.

Dear Pluma,

Yesterday I found your message: Hi! I know you have had troubles with creating pages, so I have created your userpage! You can design it as much as you like with instructions that can be found at the User page design center. Happy editing! pluma Ø 04:23, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Your kind gesture is highly appreciated! I had not logged in for a couple of days because I was not sure how to proceed. Now I can concentrate again on what I had imagined to do, i.e. drafting an article to Wikipedia on "Cochran's C test", see if I could contribute to other people's articles as well, and check if it would be appreciated if I would start translating some articles into Dutch. --Rtlam (talk) 19:35, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit to userpage

Although obviously meant to be in good faith, your recent edit to my userpage was unnecessary. The issue was resolved here a while ago. "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents&oldid=446757699#User:Fly_by_Night_is_vandalising_people_user_pages"

Bryan.Wade (talk) 04:30, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that what you were doing has been allowed, but I would strongly suggest that you remove that service award from your userpage, for displaying it is lying, and falls under the scope of WP:VAND for intentionally placing incorrect information. Fly by night was right about removing your incorrect service award. Do you want Wikipedia to be honest or not? pluma Ø 01:27, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not lying, I just like how it looks. Bryan.Wade (talk) 03:28, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Guild of Copy Editors!

Hello and welcome to the Guild of Copy Editors! I would be happy to mentor you. To become a member, there are 2 things to do. First, place this text: {{User Copy Edit}} on your user page. This will create a user box and will automatically put you on the newsletter distribution list. The second is to add your name to the participant list.

To get started on copy editing, there are several ways to find articles to copy edit.

  1. Find the list of "Wikipedia articles needing copy edit" on the right side of the GOCE main page.
  2. Join the backlog elimination drive. There are directions on the page how to join. It's just a little friendly competition to encourage copy editing and there are barnstars that you can earn.
  3. Go to the Request page. Most of the articles listed are here are articles which are in pretty good shape already, but may need some special care to make them a little more professional-sounding. Generally, these articles are intended for Good article review or the like.
  4. Find new articles that have not yet been reviewed. You can go to Special:NewPages to find them. New articles often need copy editing, and it seems a lot of article reviewers just put a {{copy edit}} tag on them. So, going through the new articles list is a way to prevent the backlog from growing.

So, there are some things to get you started. Let me know if you need any help with the copy editing process. I'm generally busy during weekdays and I may not be able to respond right away, I'd be happy to help if you need it. Happy editing! --Tea with toast (話) 01:57, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Answers to questions

It is up to you whether you do your copy editing in one edit or multiple edits. For me, it usually depends on how long the article is and how much work needs to be done. If is is a long article and I know it will take me a while, then I will put the "In use" tag up and edit section by section. One problem with trying to do everything in one edit is that on rare occasions, someone may edit the page before you save your edits. That can cause an edit conflict, and you might loose the changes you made. Is there any particular problem you are having with the backlog drive? Here is a link to the main drive page which has some more detailed instructions on how to get started. There is also a link to a FAQ page there. If you have any specific questions, let me know. Ciao! --Tea with toast (話) 04:00, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem I am having with the backlog elimination drive is that on the current drive page, I cannot comprehend the Gold Star Letterboard in the Progress section. Could you help? Happy editing! pluma Ø 04:07, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Gold Star Letterboard is something that you update yourself. If you find that you have edited more articles than one of the other top 5 people on the board, go ahead and put your own name on there (and leave the last person off the board). There are 3 different categories: # of articles, # of words, and # of articles that contain 5000+ words (and if you edit an article that contains 10,000 or more words, than can count as 2 articles). It is an optional thing. You don't have to do it. Sometimes, even if you do not edit the board yourself, someone else may notice your totals and put you up on the board. Being on the board will earn you a special prize, but you can still earn prizes even if you don't make it on the board. --Tea with toast (話) 01:01, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you again, but what does number of words mean, as in, how many you changed, how many you added, or how long the articles were? pluma Ø 01:04, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I was confused about that too when I first started! "Words" = How many words are in the article – make a note of this before you started editing the article. In order to find how many words are in an article, go to Instructions for participants, and there will be directions on how to add a script to your user account so that you can access this feature. --Tea with toast (話) 01:41, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have been using it and have been surprised at how few words articles have! Cheers and happy editing! pluma Ø 02:13, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is surprising! I'm glad you've gotten it to work. If you have any more questions about the drive, let me know and I'll see you there! --Tea with toast (話) 03:02, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For the November Drive can I put in my copy edits from October? I also entered my copy edits for the September drive too late, so am I allowed to enter those in too? Thanks, pluma Ø 02:09, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, only edits made during the month of November can be applied to the November drive. I'm sorry the edits you made in September could not be added to the count. In the future, I find it is best to enter your list of copy-edited articles on to the drive page right after you have finished with an article. Well, I hope to see you at the next drive! --Tea with toast (話) 04:17, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Beowulf

I see your good work at Beowulf. Just to mention something, you don't have to say when you're coming and going. Just edit when you edit and not edit when doing other things.

Also, when I started wkifying last year I used to make many small edits - a comma, a wikilink link etc for each save when someone told me it's better to get more things done in each save. It's up to you, when I work an article I try to get as much in a single save as possible - like this.

Like you I had trouble picking a user name. It seemed all the names were taken until the tenth or twentieth attempt. Slightsmile was not my first choice. Anyways nice to meet you, pluma. SlightSmile 23:57, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I often try to make last minute revisions to what I write before I save, so I click the "stop loading" button, which, if done at the wrong time, makes an edit conflict, which sometimes makes me lose the work I had done on the last edit, so I want to make the smallest unit of change I can without damaging the flow of the article. Thanks for the advice, I won't tell people when I come or go any more. Cheers and happy editing! pluma Ø 00:03, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

President (title)

Perhaps you would care to explain why, after I addressed two of the issues you tagged on the above article (lead too long and no section headings), you reverted my edit without explanation. Or better still, instead of tagging articles and then leaving it up to other people to do the actual work, you could actually have a go at improving the article yourself if my effort wasn't good enough for you. The main reason I got adopted was for helping me fight vandalism, not learn about copyright rules.--1966batfan (talk) 04:19, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for telling me! You need to know those rules, but I will try to direct more ant-vandalism oriented material towards you. Tomorrow I'll show you some anti-vandalsim tools. Is there anything else you want to know how to do in particular? By the way, try to remember to indent talk page responses. Happy editing!

Here are the three new pages I tagged:
1: Brad Batchelor
2: Childhood cancer awareness month
3: AÑO KLAS-SAY BAKERY & GEN. MDSE
I'm not a new page patroller. I prefer patrolling existing articles.--1966batfan (talk) 02:39, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I generally don't agree with new page patrolling, but I was just showing you how it was done for the purpose of teaching you how to use tags. I'm writing your next task now. It's an anti-vandalism tool that is extremely powerful and efficient.pluma Ø 01:31, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean to revert me?

I added this text as an update to the medical uses section...

Escitalopram is primarily used for the treatment of major depressive disorder and general anxiety disorder in adults.[1] There is some evidence favouring escitalopram over the antidepressents citalopram and fluoxetine in the first two week of major depression.[2] Concerns of sponsorship bias however is noted.[2] In another review escitalopram and sertraline had the highest rate of efficacy and acceptability among adults receiving treatment for major depression with second-generation antidepressants.[3]

Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:28, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, I didn't. There was an edit that I thought was vandalism that I then removed, but I then realised it wasn't vandalism, so I tried to revert my own edit but it resulted in an edit conflict. My computer sometimes says I had an edit conflict when I didn't, so I just restored the version that I had reverted in the first place. I didn't realise it, but the edit conflict was actually real, so I reverted your edit without realising it was there. I'm sorry for the confusion and I'll be more careful in the future. Happy editing! pluma Ø 02:39, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No worries happens to all of use. I was sort of at my limit for reverts thus though I would ask :-) Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 03:07, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure whether Alan Fudge is dead. He's sort of obscure, so it's hard to know. What do you mean by signing your undoing? To undo an edit that wasn't the last edit, click on page history and click the "undo" button for the edit there. Is that what you were asking? By the way, new talk page entries are generally placed at the bottom of the page. I will give you your next assignment shortly. Happy editing! pluma Ø 01:04, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not forgetting You or MY homework,it just need some time, and I don't have it enough... Two question : 1 how to merge editCount from different lands? the global ? need a careful hand 2 soccer logo are under fair use licence and therefore forbidden to userBox, what if I make my own? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zappatoromano (talkcontribs) 16:42, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about having little time. I don't have much either. Never feel like you need to complete an assignment by any time limit; I don't want to stress you out. Here are the answers to your questions:
  1. Merging edit counts from different accounts isn't possible as far as I know. Is that what you were asking?
  2. Do you mean "what if you make your userbox", or "what if you make your own soccer logo". If the soccer logo is copyrighted, you can't use it without permission, even if you drew the logo itself. To make your own user box, there is a wizard for making them at User:Java7837/userboxcreator To pick colours you want to use, see List of colors. The colours' names for this are the texts in the Hex triplet column.
I hope you found that helpful! If you have any more questions, let me know and happy editing as always! pluma Ø 01:26, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New user

While it is good to welcome and encourage a new user, you should ensure that they arer following the correct procedures for Wikiepedia. This edit [[7] replaced the framework of a properly formatted, referenced etc article with a chunk of unreferenced text in non wiki format which is probably copyvio and does not deserve a barnacle. Regards Motmit (talk) 22:18, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I find it best to be a bit more liberal while giving newcomers barnstars, because it makes them feel like their contributions are good. Even if the contributions aren't in wiki format, it isn't all that bad, just fix it or add maintenance tags if you don't have time. One can't expect someone new to know all the rules and regulations of the wiki from the beginning. In my opinion, welcome messages are more of a way to make a new user feel accepted, and not a mentorship offering (that's what Adopt a user| is for). Thank you for your contributions and happy editing! pluma Ø 21:39, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your adoption lessons

Hi, I notice you're posting adoption lessons saying things like this;

"What are the eight free use rationale? What happens to users who repeatedly uploads that do not meet the criteria?"

There are a number of problems here.

  1. I think you mean fair use, not free use.
  2. Are you talking about Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria?
  3. If so, there are ten criteria, not eight.
  4. Also, a fair use rationale, and the non-free content criteria, are two completely different things.
  5. Shouldn't you be making clear that uploading free images is preferred?
  6. Isn't your second question wrongly implying that users who repeatedly upload free images (which, by definition, don't meet the NFCC), will be blocked? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 01:44, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I will go and fix those problems. Thank you for the information! Copyright isn't my strongest suit. Happy editing! pluma Ø 01:47, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar

Thanks for the barn star. Do you know if there is a way to link from the Igloo screen to the article itself so you can take a closer look in a regular window? Wknight94 talk 01:54, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, how? pluma Ø 01:49, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, lol. I was actually hoping you knew. Maybe it's not possible. Wknight94 talk 02:03, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is a way, but it's inconvenient, and I was hoping that you were going to tell me an easier way. If you click on the page history button, then click "-full history-" it will bring you to the page's history, so to get to the page, just click on the on the "Read" tab. As I said, it is inconvenient, but still possible. Happy editing! pluma Ø 02:08, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a vandal

Hello, I realize I should have explained my edits instead of just pressing delete. What happened is I had started an article on Foundation Financial Group last year. It was rejected for lack of notability and I was told to revise it when I had more information. I revised it today, and deleted the old version, of which I am the author, but it was never on Wikipedia. I made my edits in draft and did not submit them yet. You told me to make my edits in Sandbox, which is an alternative, however, not permanent. In the draft guidelines, it states that I can take my time to create my draft page. However, now I cannot access my new draft - only my old draft that I don't want anymore. Can you put things back to the way they were? You also said I was vandalizing. I am not a vandal. A masochist would be a better word, I think, because you can't vandalize yourself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geis0099 (talkcontribs) 00:16, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since the Wikipedia sandbox is not permantent, you can create your own sandbox here. That sandbox will not be blanked automatically as the public sandbox is. I hope that's helpful and happy editing! pluma Ø 00:23, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I will do my edits in my own sandbox. Can I get my recent revision back? Otherwise, I have to do it all over again. Geis0099 (talk) 00:30, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To get the revision that was undone, go to the page's history, then click on the date next to the revision you made. You can copy and paste the text into your sandbox, but it will not have all the formatting, so you will have to re-add that. Ask me if you have any more questions and ha and happy editing! pluma Ø 21:50, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

do what you like

I'm a scientist who works with exotic animals. hawk what you want on here. we don't like it. we won't fight you on it. It's futile. keep a macaw as a pet. keep a chimp. think what you like. we can't stop you realistically.

my edit was constructive in the following very real sense: we do not condone the keeping of these animals. you provided no citations to the contray (or any at all).

I will revert once more. you will revert again. then you can get back to your pictures of puppies my friend. I'm too busy. you cannot give a proper life to an animal like that. you're deluded.

or you could cite a zoologist who thinks military macaws are good pets. or evidence that most of them are bred. or evidence of anything you said.

welcome to wikipedia to you too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Duracell (talkcontribs) 06:24, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
