Comment: A lot of primary citations from specific people, rather than from major review outlets. There is also no lead and no plot section, as well as no indication of development history (If that exists), meaning it fails comprehensiveness criteria. Overview
[edit]Crush is a novel by American author Ada Calhoun published by Viking Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House. This book marks Calhoun's fiction debut following her non-fiction works, including Also a Poet and the New York Times bestseller Why We Can't Sleep. It is categorized as literary fiction and contemporary romance by Viking[1] and as fiction by Goodreads.[2] The book was featured at the Heartland[3] and CALIBA[4] regional bookseller conferences, and in September 2024 named one of the most anticipated books of 2025 by Zibby Owens.[5]
Critical Reception
[edit]In a starred review, Booklist described Crush as an "angsty, metaphysical, literature-besotted love story" with a "brainy, funny, rigorously analytical, and determined narrator... Crush (such a charged word) interrogates all that we think we know about love and soul mates, commitment and conviction, while tracking the long struggle to fully become oneself and do right."[6]
Kirkus Reviews said Crush is "chock-full of great lines... Anything Ada Calhoun wants to write is well worth reading."[7]
The book received advance praise from Emma Straub, Isaac Fitzgerald, Claire Dederer, Shauna Niequist,[8] Bethany Ball, and Molly Ringwald, who said,[9] "The word 'crush' often conjures the innocence of adolescence—a time when your life story isn't yet written and anything is possible. But what happens when that dormant feeling is awakened in middle age? Ada Calhoun's Crush is a gripping fever dream of a book leading the reading into the beguiling depths of desire, ecstasy, and obsession."
