DescriptionCannibalism in Brazil ('French Antarctica') in 1555, by André Thevet.jpg
English: Cannibalism among "the savages" in Brazil, as described and pictured by André Thevet, a Franciscan monk who accompagnied Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon to South America where de Villegagnon established a French colony (called "French Antarctica") in the Bay of Rio de Janeiro. Thevet's writings are from 1555 and were published in 1557 in his book "The singularities of French Antarctica". The French colony in today's Brazil lasted only briefly; it was overtaken by the Portuguese in 1567.
