As there have been several instances where actorsand actresses who took part in unauthorized pro-ductions of musical or dramatic composition havefound it necessary to obtain bail hurriedly; andthere have been several convictions in which, however, the complainants have personally requestedsuspension of sentence, feeling that it would be aparticular hardship to imprison the convicted pei-sons. Even the actor or actress who signs a contractwith a manager to take part in any productionor attraction must satisfy him or herself that theparty they sign with has the right to produce thedramatic or musical compositions which they areengaged to interpret. There is also a serious penalty attached on be-half of the person who prints upon any composi-tion the indication that the same has been copy-righted, unless such copyright has been entirelygranted. The general copyright statutes apply to citizens ofa foreign state or nation, when such foreign stateor nation permit to the citizens of the UnitedStates of America the benefit of copyright on sub-stantially the same basis as to its own citizens. The blanks for obtaining copyrights with fulldirections can be obtained from the Librarian ofCongress, at Washington, District of Columbia, andmust be followed strictly. The Librarian of Congress has no discretion whichwould enable him to determine the validity of acopyright nor the priority or infringement there-of; all questions of this nature must be decidedby the United States courts. There is quite a serious difference of opinionamong authorities as to whether a typewritten copyis sufficient on making the first entry, but thewriter refers to the official application for copyright,from which he quotes, The law distinctly specifiesthe printed
