English: Lydia Hamilton Smith (1815 - 1884) , photo likely before 1868. Housekeper, confidant and purported common law wife of abolitionist Congressman Thaddeus Stevens. She managed his homes and businesses in Lancaster, PA and Washington, D.C. and served as his hostess. She was of mixed race ("quadroon")
