Revision as of 18:40, 13 June 2021

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – vandalism. Joeykai (talk) 19:04, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Joeykai: I see a million edits but nothing I can recognize as vandalism and there is nothing on talk apart from a very short and civil discussion about whether a particular game was suspended. Please spell out the problem, preferably on article talk. Johnuniq (talk) 23:52, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – vandalism. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 19:24, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd: There's nothing on article talk and there is no way an admin here can judge those edits to be vandalism—is the problem diff and others from 136.158.33.0/24? What about the most recent IP edits? Please spell out the problem, preferably on article talk. Johnuniq (talk) 23:59, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Full protection: Page is under 1RR and there is a small edit war ongoing regarding a contentious change from Nishidani that I reverted to discuss on the talk, per WP:BRD. Generalrelative reverted the edit in violation of BRD. Given the page is under 1RR, the contentious edit should be reverted to the status quo and the page fully protected in the interim. Toa Nidhiki05 19:37, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The change I made wasn't contentious when I made it. The contention arose when the plaintiff here reverted it, without explaining, as I had on the talk page, the reasons for the edit. I had to prompt the reverter, Toa Nidhiki05, twice to get an answer, inadequate at that. So far that editor, who has reverted several times, has no backing for their contention, whereas two other editors agree my edit was due. The obvious move is not page protection, but asking the plaintiff here to gain consensus.Nishidani (talk) 19:50, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Toa Nidhiki05, Do you report all users involved in edit warring, including Nishidani and GeneralRelative, to ANEW or ANI? I think ANEW or ANI would be perfect place to report any user that conducts any edit warring behaviour. 36.77.95.42 (talk) 19:53, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody has violated 1RR as of yet, to my knowledge. Fully protecting the page and reverting to the prior consensus in the interim would proactively ensure that no edit war occurs. Toa Nidhiki05 19:54, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Toa Nidhiki05: I find this kind of squabble to be very tiresome—it looks like three editors are against you on talk and if I fully protect the article now (WP:WRONGVERSION) I think it would be with the version you don't want so I'm passing although another admin might like to act. Johnuniq (talk) 00:10, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Johnuniq, the only one squabbling here is Nishidani, whose only response to my concerns was to insult me. This is exactly the sort of scenario BRD is supposed to prevent, by requiring editors like Nishidani to discuss rather than do nothing because their content is in the article and can't be removed. If you don't want to stop that, fine, but just know that discussion has essentially died and there's no way to draw him back in. Toa Nidhiki05 00:14, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are three editors (Nishidani, Generalrelative and ValarianB) one one side and, as far as a quick look shows, only you on the other. At any rate, the point of my post was WP:WRONGVERSION which means the full protection would not do what you want. Johnuniq (talk) 00:20, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, if someone edit is wrong or there is a contentious edit warring, any user can discuss a Dispute resolution whether on the article's talk page, or in Administrators noticeboard. 36.77.95.42 (talk) 00:41, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fully protected for a period of one week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. El_C 15:32, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Articles from List of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films post-split

Indefinite semi-protection: Carrying over the protection level after a size split.  Ganbaruby! (talk) 21:08, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect protection may only be necessary for the most recent decade or two. It was originally applied in 2017, and looking prior to that, most of the reverts are about upcoming films or those in the prior decade. I've unprotected the base page as no longer necessary (the protecting admin is no longer active). I suggest we wait before protecting, though I wouldn't mind if an admin applies protection directly to the current decade, as this subject area is a frequent vandalism target. — The Earwig (talk) 21:21, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Declined. Wait and see sounds good. Update as needed. El_C 15:34, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism by a vandal who refuses to care that Wikipedia is not censored, and is using a changing or morphing IP. If the page's current level of protection was bumped up to semi-protected, that would limit the vandal's ability to edit-war.--Mr Fink (talk) 15:46, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Reason: Three years ago, this page was extended-confirmed protected due to an edit war. I talked to the protecting admin and stated that there is zero chance for him to unprotect the article. Would consider downgrading the protection to semi. ScarletViolet tc 11:46, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikipedia Administrators, I am writing to respectfully request the unprotection of the article titled "Marehan." I understand that this page is currently protected to prevent vandalism, but I believe that unprotecting it, or at least reducing the level of protection, would allow for valuable contributions from knowledgeable editors like myself and others. I am particularly interested in making well-researched edits and updates to enhance the quality and accuracy of the information on this page. I am aware of Wikipedia's guidelines and policies and will ensure that my contributions comply with the platform's standards. Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to contributing to the improvement of this article.

Reduction in protection level: Hi guys, would you please be able to unprotect this name, which has been salted for 14 years (wow!) so I can create a dab page there? I think the threat is long gone. Thanks very much. Dr. Vogel (talk) 10:20, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: An unusual case. The page is creation protected because it's transcluded in the page User:DarkFalls/SALT, which in turn is "cascade" protected. Wonder if that's how they did it in 2007. Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

Create a level 3 header with a link to the article in question, then a {{pagelinks}} template and then the reason.
