The Berean Standard Bible (BSB) is a translation of the Bible in contemporary English, in the public domain. The BSB was published in 2020 and produced by Bible Hub, Discovery Bible, OpenBible.com, and the Berean Bible Translation Committee.[1]

The Berean team describes the BSB as "a freely shareable translation of the Holy Bible, effective for public reading, study, memorization, and evangelism."[2]

Translation Tiers

The BSB is a part of a multi-tier translation system: an interlinear translation, a literal translation, a study translation (the BSB), and emphasized Bible.[3]

Berean notes that "it is a great challenge for a single translation to meet all ministry needs of the Christian community. Whereas literal translation may be best for connecting directly to the original language, sometimes a smooth and clear text is more helpful for public reading. The translation tiers of interlinear, literal, and study help to fill in those gaps and to connect directly to the source language texts."[4]

Comparison with other translations

Berean describes the BSB as in the middle between a word-for-word translation and thought-for-thought translation, and as being between the English Standard Version and Christian Standard Bible.[5]

Public Domain

On April 2023, Berean dedicated the entire text to the public domain.[6]

Due to the text being in the public domain, various third-party Bible web tools have defaulted to using the BSB:
