Batman: Arkham Asylum is an action-adventure stealth video game for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and is based on DC Comics' Batman. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics and was released on August 25, 2009 in North America and August 28, 2009 in Europe.[1][2] It is based on the long-running comic book mythos, as opposed to most other Batman games which are adaptations of the character in other media besides the source material.
Gameplay
Game Informer magazine compares the gameplay to that of BioShock,[8] saying it places just as much focus on Batman's role as a detective as on his combat prowess. Most of the game is played from Batman's perspective through an over-the-shoulder, third person perspective, similar to that of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space.[9]
Arkham was chosen as a location because of its limitations including the fact that it's located on an island. Arkham will be a persistent location that the player is able to freely roam, including an area that serves as Batman's secret on-site Batcave. Arkham will make use of Batman's many gadgets to accomplish tasks and take down foes, such as using the grapple gun to get a better perspective on a particular area.[10]
Combat
Some boss battles focus on combat while others focus on gadgets. FreeFlow Combat[10] is accomplished using only three buttons: Attack, Stun and Takedown.[8]
During battle, a combo multiplier at the top of the screen will increase with every strike. Once the combo expires, a colony of bats will swirl around Batman and then contribute to an experience bar on the left side of the screen. In an RPG-like skill tree system players will be able to distribute points where they prefer. Gadgets are revealed by collecting items in secret rooms, and they can be upgraded using accumulated experience points to access new areas. The player will need gadgets to survive against certain enemies. There are sections that involve stealth, although the developers state that they prefer to call them "Predatory" gameplay sections, as stealth tends to imply weakness. Batman can create distractions with bodies and victims' yells, and then stalk the guards as they go to inspect. The combat experience is heightened using realistic physics.[8]
Detective
Investigative mode is the centerpiece in Batman's arsenal. While in detective mode, the visors in the cowl will be engaged.[11] The visor can highlight points of interest and scan items into Batman's database, similar to the Scan Visor found in Nintendo's Metroid Prime trilogy. Other gadgets include a pheromone tracker, a fingerprint scanner, and an x-ray vision mode.[10] Additionally, the detective gadgets will be able to identify riddles scattered throughout each level of Arkham, which unlock challenge maps and other upgrades after a certain set of them are solved.[9]
Plot
This article may be too long to read and navigate comfortably. |
The game begins with Batman capturing the Joker after his latest plot and escorting him to Arkham Asylum for imprisonment. Due to the Joker's recent attack on Gotham City's Blackgate Prison, a large number of sane convicts have been transferred. Shortly after arriving, however, the Joker, with the help of Harley Quinn, frees all the inmates and locks down the Asylum with Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and much of the staff still inside.
As the Joker makes his escape, Batman learns that Zsasz has escaped and has captured one of the guards. Batman manages sneak up on Zsasz and take him down with a glide kick. Batman then receives a transmission from Harley Quinn that she has captured the warden. Batman learns that Joker has placed bombs all over Gotham threatening to detonate them if anyone enters Arkham. The Dark Knight a transmission by Joker that Commissioner Gordon has been captured and taken to Harley Quinn. Batman makes his way to the Arkham Island's exterior. He learns that Joker has sent some prisoners to go destroy the Batmobile. Batman manages to fend them off.
Upon reaching the Medical Facility, Batman has to find an alternate route in. While looking for Commissioner Gordon in the morgue, Batman finds the area filled with gas. When he finds Commissioner Gordon, who he presumes is dead. The gas in the room begins to take effect on Batman when he encounters Scarecrow as a giant. Upon re-entering the morgue when using the Bat-Signal on the giant Scarecrow, Batman gets the drop on Harley Quinn and saves Commissioner Gordon. Upon entering a room, they find Bane tied to the ceiling. Bane pleads for help and stated that Dr. Young drained the Venom from his blood. Joker turns on the venom enough for Bane to break free and attack Batman by throwing him into the boiler room. Batman ends up breaking the tubes on Bane to defeat him. Upon making it outside, Batman learns from Commissioner Gordon that Harley Quinn escaped during the fight. When Bane catches up to them, Batman remote controls the Batmobile to ram Bane into the water. He then escorts Commissioner Gordon to a waiting police boat so the Commissioner Gordon can help the police find the bombs and disarm them.
At Batman's secret Batcave in Dead Man's Point on Arkham, Batman learns that Dr. Young headed up a project that she experimented on Arkham's patients that seems to be an upgrade to the Venom chemical called Titan. Batman learns that the formula is missing from that data. To prevent Joker from getting to it and creating an army of Banes, Batman ends up going after Dr. Young (who was heading to Arkham Mansion with Aaron Cash). While moving through the sewers, Batman has a brief encounter with Killer Croc and ends up taking an alternative route to the surface.
Upon going through the caves, Batman infiltrates Arkham Mansion to find Dr. Young's notes before Joker and his followers do. After taking down the goons and rescues the hostages, Batman learns that Dr. Young is being targeted. Batman rescues Aaron Cash from some prisoners and tells Batman that he told Dr. Young to go to her office and hide. Batman heads to Dr. Young's office to investigate. When he does reach Dr. Young's office, he learns from the security footage that she got to them first. Batman follows her trail after learning from Oracle that the first bomb in Gotham contained marzipan and kittens. Batman manages to destroy the notes before Joker could get his hands on them. Batman learns from a transmission from Joker that Zsasz has Dr. Young with him in Warden Sharp's office. When making his way to Warden Sharp's office, the Fear Gas effects Batman again as he revisits his parents' murder before facing a giant Scarecrow and an army of skeletons. After defeating Scarecrow, Batman makes it to Warden Sharp's office and uses his Batarang to knock out Zsasz. Dr. Young explains that Joker made her extract some of the Venom from Bane. The safe behind the plaque explodes when Dr. Young tries to get the key thus killing her. Upon recovering, Harley Quinn unleashes some prisoners on Batman.
Batman relays the info he learned from Dr. Young about a Titan Production Facility and if she found a way around the security gates. In order to get the security gates shut down, Batman follows the trail of Warden Sharp's blood.
Batman follows the blood to the Arkham's Penitentiary area. Upon finding the test subjects to Joker's Titan Experiments, Batman finds Poison Ivy in her cell who states that her plants are in pain. When he does find where Warden Sharp is, Batman sees security footage where Harley Quinn unleashes Poison Ivy. At the time when Joker unleashes the experimented lunatics, Batman has Warden Sharp give him the Sequence Generator since his computer was destroyed. Upon telling Warden Sharp to stay where he is, Batman takes the Cryptographic Sequencer and goes to unlock the gates. Batman ends up confronting and pursuing Harley Quinn. Harley throws various obstacles for Batman ranging from sending prisoners to attack Batman to trapping Louie Green and a guard in a room with a Joker venom bomb. Batman defeats Harley Quinn and sees the names on the list for "Joker's Party" (with the names being Selena Kyle, Harvey Dent, Mad Hatter, Basil Karlo, Waylon Jones, Oswald C. Cobblepot, Arnold Wesker, and Luke Oliver). Harley accidentally squeals that Joker is in Arkham's Botanical Gardens when she ends up imprisoned.
Upon making it to Arkham's Botanical Gardens, Batman frees Carl Todd the Janitor and shuts down the generator that powers the electricity in a flooded corridor. Batman later saves Jordan Fraser the Janitor from Joker's henchmen and learns from him that the orderly Robert Stirling Luke Curtis the janitor are held hostage in the Aviary. Batman finds the cages containing the orderlies hanging over a deep pit. To free them, he sneeks past the other guards and takes down the operator. Robert Stirling stated that he worked for Dr. Young and had no idea that Joker was behind this. Batman finds the entrance to the Joker's Titan Production Facility. When Batman confronts Joker, he uses Titan Compound-filled darts on two of his henchmen who he unleashes on Batman. With the Titan Production Facility destroyed, Batman contacts Oracle telling her that Joker has been using a Venom Plant to help create the Titan Compound and has escaped with some of the Titan Formula. Batman comes up with a plan to seek out Poison Ivy for help. Upon contacting the Batjet, Batman receives a Line Launcher to cross a chasm so that he can track down Poison Ivy. While tracking down Poison Ivy, Batman finds Robert Stirling and Luke Curtis dead. When he does find Poison Ivy, he manages to get her to tell him of a plant that grows deep within Arkham Island near Killer Croc's lair.
Batman contacts Oracle for a way into Killer Croc's lair. Upon recaping the door he encountered near Arkham's Batcave, he decides to seek out Aaron Cash in Arkham Mansion. While making his way out of the Botanical Gardens, Batman discovers that the Titan Formula is having a side effect on Poison Ivy's plants causing them to grow out of control. Upon meeting up with Aaron Cash in the Arkham Mansion, Batman learns that Killer Croc is kept in a chamber below the Intensive Care building. With all the plants blocking the main entrance, Batman ends up finding another way in. After doing that and taking out a bunch of thugs, Batman ends up in another fight with Giant Scarecrow when the Fear Gas kicks in. This time, the actual Scarecrow escapes into the catacombs to fill it with Fear Gas. When Batman catches up to Scarecrow in Killer Croc's lair, he threatens to drop the Fear Powder into the water only to be attacked by Killer Croc. When Killer Croc grabs Scarecrow, Batman goes after Killer Croc to get to the plant that has the spores needed for an anti-venom. After collecting enough spores, Batman activates the sonic beacon he planted to find his way out. After escaping Killer Croc, Batman retreats to his Arkham Island Batcave to create an Anti-Titan Compound. After making some of it in the Batcave, Batman then goes to find Poison Ivy to test the Anti-Titan Compound on her. Just then, some plants break into the Batcave causing damage to it.
While looking for Poison Ivy, Batman learns from Oracle that Joker has three underground Pump Rooms that are pumping the Titan Compound into the water. After disabling the pumps and taking out prisoners and a Titan Compound-enhanced prisoner, Batman heads to the surface to look for Poison Ivy. His best guess is the Botanical Gardens where he last saw her.

The story was co-written by Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Detective Comics)[11] while Wildstorm crafted the appearances of the characters.[11] Game Informer teases that Arkham Asylum will be the ultimate Batman experience and the voice cast will reflect that, featuring Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker and Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn in the game, reprising their voice roles from the long-running DC Animated Universe.[11] Tom Kane joins the cast as Commissioner Gordon, Amadeus Arkham and Warden Sharp. The game will be based on the 70-year Batman franchise as a whole rather than being tied to any particular adaptation. Arkham will run on Epic Games Unreal Engine 3.[25][26][27] The Windows version will make use of Microsoft's Windows Live service, allowing players to earn gamerscore.[6] In April 2009 ads began appearing in the PlayStation Network service advertising the ability to play as the Joker.[28] IGN later confirmed that the Joker will be available at the launch of the game as a free download from PlayStation Store,[29] but will only be playable in the Challenge Maps.[29] Joker is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 version. [30] In the PlayStation 3's online community-based service PlayStation Home, users can unlock the Batcave Outpost personal apartment as well as Batman's suit, gadgets, and the Batmobile from the game.[31]
A Collector's Edition has been released by GameStop.[32] The package features a 14 inch Batarang in the style of the game, a 50 page character journal, a bonus DVD or Blu-Ray disc (depending on whether or not it is for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3) including interviews with voice actors, an exclusive Crime Alley Challenge Map, and a Batarang Box Set.[33] Additionally, an exclusive preorder challenge map from Gamestop was announced called 'Dem Bones.' It features the Scarecrow and places Batman under the influence of Scarecrow's 'fear toxin' causing him to hallucinate and all the enemies to be seen as skeletons. [34]
A demo of the game was released on the PlayStation Store on August 6, 2009 and Xbox Live and PC on August 7.[35]

Arkham has been well received so far, and holds a 91% at GameRankings based on 12 reviews.[46] Metacritic currently holds the game at 91% (based on 13 reviews). The first review of the game was published by GamesMaster. The magazine awarded Arkham Asylum a 96%[48]. Blogger RamRaider criticized the review and accused Eidos Interactive of review fixing.[49] However, these claims remain unsubstantiated.[50] Eidos released the following statement in response to the controversy.[51]
"With regards to an article posted on RamRaider alleging that Eidos has fixed review scores for Batman: Arkham Asylum, we want to state that no discussions have been held about review scores with any magazines. In short there is simply not one shred of truth in this article, except for the title of the game."
— Jon Brooke, Eidos UK marketing manager
Game Informer praised the game, stating "Batman: Arkham Asylum is this year's "BioShock," not just from the connection established with the world, but from its ability to innovate where new ideas are needed, and moreover, deliver an adventure unlike any other." It was rated 9.5/10[40] OPM gave Arkham a 9/10, citing "Arkham Asylum is comfortably the best comic book game that PlayStation's ever had, and is up there with the system's best actioners, full stop." OPM summarized the game as "a class act".[43] Xbox World 360 scored Arkham 95%, stating "a massively impressive licensed game."[52] IGN's Greg Miller gave the game a 9.3 out of 10, praising the voice acting, the story and overall gameplay and called it "the greatest Comic Book game of all time."[21] Eurogamer also praised the game, stating "this isn't just the best grown-up Batman game, it's the best superhero game, bar none", and scoring Arkham with a 9/10.[37] 1UP.com's Thierry Nguyen gave the game an A-, stating that developer Rocksteady "manages to combine combat, stealth, storytelling, and cartoon voices into the best digital Batman simulator we've seen to date."[36] Gametrailers praised the game's "little details that truly bring Arkham Asylum to life", and that consumers should "know that this is a game worth playing", giving Arkham a 9.0/10.[42]
