RMS Amazon  United Kingdom
RMS Amazon.

The paddle steamer caught fire, exploded and sank in the Atlantic Ocean 110 nautical miles (200 km) west south west of the Isles of Scilly. There were 59 survivors. They were rescued by Gertruida, Helleschina (both ( Netherlands) and Marsden ( United Kingdom). RMS Amazon was on a voyage from Southampton, Hampshire to the West Indies.

HMS Birkenhead  Royal Navy The troopship, a steam frigate, was wrecked near Gaansbaai, Africa with the loss of 450 of the 693 people on board. She was on a voyage from Cape Town, Cape Colony to Algoa Bay.

Saluda  United States The steamboat exploded and sank in the Missouri River at Lexington, Missouri. Over 100 people were killed; there were 40–50 survivors.

Dorset United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Victoria The brig was lost on a voyage from Hobart to Melbourne, where she was wrecked upon the Kent Group in Bass Strait. No lives were lost.

Atlantic  United States Sunk on Lake Erie after a collision with the steamer Ogdensburg, with the loss of 130-250 lives.

Ship State Description
Citizen  USA This American whaler in the Arctic had been lying-to in a gale for 4 days when the depth began to shoal and before they could get under way she grounded on a sand bank and was lost. The sea being too rough for the boats, 5 men were drowned using spars to get ashore. They survived with hospitality from the indigenous people. Between February and April 1853 some parties attempted the 225 miles to Cape Dezhnev cross the ice, the remainder were rescued by the Bremen ship Joseph Haydon on 2 July who had heard of the wreck and had been searching for them.[3]

Ship State Description
Frances  USA This American whaler, under Captain William Swain, was wrecked on the reef of Mangaia on the night of 25th December when she drifted on in a calm, there being no bottom outside the reef for anchors to hold. There was no loss of life. The Captain had high praise for the help of 22 native canoes that helped unload crew and provisions.[6]
