Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by CambridgeBayWeather (talk | contribs) at 02:19, 23 September 2014 (Current requests for reduction in protection level). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Temporary semi-protection: IP keeps restoring page that doesn't yet meet WP:GNG. Requesting 72-hour protection. Episode will have premiered by then, and there will be enough secondary sources to warrant an article at that point. Snuggums (talk / edits) 00:22, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Repeated addition of empty "template" tables and removal of referenced information. Edits are being made by both registered users as well as IP users. Edit before most-recent undo again adds blank tables and removes references: diff. AldezD (talk) 23:18, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Persistent vandalism from new editors, as opposed to IPs. Mr. Guye (talk) 23:10, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Most recently, someone said that the subject was gay on the page. It triggered the abuse filter and was reverted by another editor. Mr. Guye (talk) 23:05, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes: BLP policy violations. Khadar Khani (talk) 22:21, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 2 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Mike VTalk 01:27, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An IP address (User:177.9.238.224) keeps adding unsourced information (saying a character is "written be 52 years old" (or any other age, this is the most recent done to the section on the character "Hank" in Saw VI. Despite asking the editor to stop, they keep doing this. I believe they edited from other IP Addresses too, since these edits keep appearing. Could someone take a look at the edits and decide if the page should be semi-rpotected and/or the IP Addresses blocked (including the most recent one)? Thanks. Saturn 28 (talk) 21:39, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There's been an edit war going on. Someone keeps saying that the show no longer airs on the Disney Channel, even though, as it says in the article, this is far from accurate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gagaluv1 (talkcontribs) 20:27, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism.Electricburst1996 (User talk:Electricburst1996) 19:31, 22 September 2014 (UTC) Unregistered users have been adding shows that never aired on Nick Jr.[reply]

    Semi-protection: Multiple IP's are currently engaged in vandalizing site.CFredkin (talk) 18:38, 22 September 2014 (UTC) Multiple red-linked editors are involved as well.CFredkin (talk) 20:28, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: BLP policy violations. I left notes about the BLP issues but users and unknown ips are adding unproven allegations based on selectively choosed news sources which are also subject to verification. I have also added contradicting news sources and requested the editors to wait till court's ruling. MehulWB (talk) 17:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: IP keeps removing content without explanation despite being asked not to do so. Snuggums (talk / edits) 16:07, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Page being restored before meeting WP:GNG. 72 hour protection should be enough for reviews to come in. Snuggums (talk / edits) 15:55, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Mike VTalk 01:19, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Problems with an IP address, who wants to change the format of the article unnecessarily imo. Asturkian (talk) 14:31, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Content dispute. Please use the article's talk page or other forms of dispute resolution. — MusikAnimal talk 22:25, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Indefinite semi-protection: BLP policy violations – This page is at pending changes 2, and there is an explicit consensus to not use PC2 on Wikipedia, at all. The PC2 has been implemented with consensus at AN/I, yet local consensus can't override long standing community consensus. . Grognard Chess (talk) Help:Getting rid of Media Viewer 06:16, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Chess: your first stop should have been at User talk:xaosflux but I see someone else has already asked. Also a link to the PC2 and the ANI discussions would have helped. By the way I see that semi was added about 12 hours before you posted. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 10:24, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Chess, Mike V, and CambridgeBayWeather:, while I recently created an expiry date for the unusual PC2 level on this article (and do support it as a temporary IAR measure), I did not initiate this chain of events and defer action to the initiating admin Cuchullain (c.f. message on Cuchellain's talk). — xaosflux Talk 15:11, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't appear Chess asked either me or Xaosflux about this, or participated in previous discussions. I could have explained that semi-protection hadn't been effective, as these articles have been targeted by people savvy enough to use sockpuppet and single-purpose accounts that have been autoconfirmed. The issue was discussed at ANI here and a number of people supported pending revisions to deal with the particular problems at these pages. It was further explained on the talk page here. Even disregarding the ANI discussion, the articles required protection, and the only other conventional solution would have been full protection. This is an unusual solution to an unusual problem, which hasn't gone away, by the way. The solution is also *temporary* as Xaos says.--Cúchullain t/c 15:56, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Declined Tagged for archiving. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 02:19, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
