"MAGA Communism" Section

[edit]

There is currently a discussion on the Jackson Hinkle article about whether to include "MAGA Communism" in this article and remove it from that article. Here are the RS with more information about "MAGA Communism".[1][2] I would expect it to be in the "Derivative slogans" section. Alleycat1995 (talk) 13:33, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RE: moving MAGA Communism proposal
Just to say this was a suggestion I made and another contributor supported, but in hindsight based on the current length of the section it may be deemed inappropriate for MAGA, and instead better suited to Hinkle's page with a short reference in this one. I'd otherwise say on reflection it would be better suited to the References to the slogan by others section, or even a standalone section, given it's technically not a derivative of MAGA, but instead a "type of" MAGA politic. Pinging top contributors for comment.

I agree with CommunityNotesContributor. As things stand, I do not think a full "MAGA Communism" article would be longer than this. It is also mainly associated with Hinkle (so I would oppose moving that section here on the same undue weight ground correctly argued by CommunityNotesContributor), and Haz does not have his own article yet. So other than having a little mention here, as suggested by CommunityNotesContributor, I think that is all we should do. I would wait some more time and more reliable sources coming out for a full article.

You could go ahead and add this if you tone down the drama and just put like 1 sentence about it. Stick to the facts. LesbianTiamat (talk) 18:19, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When was America great?

[edit]

Eric Holder and others ask "When was it that America was great?", which is easily shot down by pointing out the bad things at any point in the past (slavery, jim crow, etc). But writers such as Fareed Zakaria have pointed out that MAGA does not really refer to any specific point in the past. Rather, MAGA is a reaction to the fast pace of change in general (ethnic, political, technological), and the alienation and resentment that many feel about this fast pace of change. As this article develops, I think it would be quite astute to incorporate this viewpoint of Zakaria and others into the article. --Westwind273 (talk) 16:04, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The New Propaganda War

[edit]

These are excellent articles (a MUST read!) dealing with MAGA's war against truth, freedom, and democracy. It is carried on by elements of Trumpism (MAGA, GOP, Trump) and Trump's autocratic dictator friends.

  • "The New Propaganda War"[1]
  • Oliver Darcy's commentary about it: "Journalist sounds alarm on dangers of propaganda, calling it 'one of the worst crises for American democracy this century'"[2]

The refs are fully usable as is. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 19:36, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Stated Tenets?

[edit]

What are the stated tenents of MAGA with references to original material (so we can verify validity of the tenents provided)? 2601:680:CC86:9650:B5F3:66BE:5A42:FC1B (talk) 22:24, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggesting "MAGA" a racist dog-whistle in the first paragraph is unnecessary.

[edit]

I have never heard anyone use "MAGA" as a racist dog-whistle, but I'm sure it happens, albeit very uncommonly. I feel that putting this information in the first paragraph makes the article seem biased and unnecessarily taints the reader's view of the slogan as they read through the Wiki page. I think it should either be removed or moved to a different section further down. The cited articles for this statement are either exploring whether the "MAGA" statement is racist (and do not come to any concrete conclusions) or seem to be written in bad faith simply to disparage the phrase and/or Donald Trump. 64.189.202.180 (talk) 23:20, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ignores Goldwater

[edit]

This page ignores that Goldwater used the phrase in his 1964 Republican campaign for President. Pretty huge error to not have the first use in American politics almost two decades before Reagan. 2601:1C2:1B7F:3260:3919:E7:CE8B:F7FE (talk) 04:29, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Intriguing. What book did you read it from? Just asking so I can source it to the article? Tavantius (talk) 15:33, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganizing

[edit]

I hope most people will see the value in combining some sections so we can keep examples from television shows together, and so on.

Yes, some examples used the phrase verbatim and some used derivatives or parodies, but much of this page is just instances of other people using the phrase or similar phrases. They blend together.

I think it works better, but I suppose it deserved to be discussed first. Sorry. I wasn't planning such extension changes but it was hard to stop moving paragraphs to where they fit. Seananony (talk) 01:34, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Change ""Make America Great Again" (MAGA, US: /ˈmæɡə/)[1] is an American political slogan and political movement most recently popularized by Donald Trump during his successful 2016 presidential campaign and widely used during his 2024 presidential campaign." to ""Make America Great Again" (MAGA, US: /ˈmæɡə/)[1] is an American political slogan and political movement most recently popularized by Donald Trump during his successful 2016 and 2024 presidential campaigns.

Done. I used a slightly different phrasing from what was requested here so I could link the phrases "in 2016" and "in 2024" instead of linking only the year. Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 06:49, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
