Early Life

[edit]

Background

[edit]

Devi Kroell was born in Austria and grew up in Switzerland, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, and Greece[6] . Her father was an Austrian ambassador[7][8]. She was schooled in French International Lycées[9] . As a result of her international upbringing, Kroell is fluent in English, German, French, Italian, and speaks Indonesian, Spanish, and Greek[10] . The diversity of the influences she grew up with is felt in her work[11] , which combines the highest level of luxury craftsmanship with local artisanal knowledge[12] .

Studies

[edit]

Kroell studied business and economics at the University of Economics in Vienna[13] , Austria, and graduated summa cum laude with a master's degree in business administration[14] . She also studied fashion at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna[15] , Austria.

Career

[edit]

Kroell started her career in 2000 working for her fashion school professors Jean-Charles de Castelbajac[16] in Paris and Helmut Lang in New York[17] . She then moved on to famed Place Vendôme Jewelers[18] in Paris, and designed what to date are considered some of the best selling jewelry must-haves[19] .

Devi Kroell founded her eponymous label in New York in 2004[20] . She started out with one bag, the Classic Hobo, in 3 different sizes and 15 colors[21] . In 2004, when Kroell first appeared in Vogue, no fashionable wardrobe was complete without the designer’s metallic snakeskin hobo[22] . Within weeks of presenting the collection, Vogue magazine published the first of many multi-page features on Kroell[23]. Barneys New York placed the first order[24] , and Bergdorf Goodman soon followed suit[25] . The collection sold out instantly. The first delivery sold to Hollywood A-listers, who were photographed by paparazzi for weekly magazines, showcasing Kroell's designs in magazines and on reality TV shows. The waitlists across the country ran in the thousands, making Devi Kroell an overnight success[26][27].

Kroell expanded her collections by adding footwear and full-fledged clothing lines[28][29]. She opened her first retail store in East Hampton in 2005[30] . More stores followed on Madison Avenue in New York[31][32][33] , in Las Vegas[34] , Beverly Hills[35] , and on Via Montenapoleone in Milan[36] .

Notable collaborations include:

  • Barbie: The Devi Kroell Barbie is one of the top 10 most expensive Barbies ever sold[37].
  • Target: A "masstige" “luxury for less” Devi Kroell for Target accessories collection with the mass retailer.[38][39]
  • Luxottica: An eyewear license with the largest eyewear group globally[40].
  • Swarovski | Atelier Swarovski: A Devi Kroell x Atelier Swarovski jewelry collection.

By 2010, the label was distributed through 300 of the most prestigious luxury retailers worldwide[41] and owned and operated 6 flagship stores[42] in prime real estate locations[43] globally[44].

Kroell became known for coaxing quiet luxury into all her collections, creating something for everyone on her list[45] . Her collections are often described as combining purity and minimalism with textures that are not what they seem at first glance[46]. She is said to have the "Midas Touch" when it comes to designing[47].

Kroell sold her Devi Kroell label in 2011 and is no longer affiliated with it[48][49] [50] .

As an expert in highest level luxury[51][52] and laid back style[53] , she consulted for lifestyle house Loro Piana, working with founders Sergio and Luisa Loro Piana[54] .

In 2012, Kroell founded a fashion and eyewear business, Dax Gabler[55] , which was sold to a leading eyewear group in 2018 for its proprietary material technology and design patents[56] .

In 2020, Kroell started another venture, Manufacture (III), a project that prizes handwork, values craftsmanship over branding, and aims to preserve expert artisanal knowledge[57] . The concept is a collection of accessories, home, and lifestyle items. For M(III), Kroell worked with Florentine leather goods factories, Parisian silvermaker Puiforcat, Venetian glass artisan Venini, and Italian writing instrument manufacturer Montegrappa[58] .
