{{helpme}}

Hi there!

I have been reading Wikipedia for many years and thought I would register... I would particularly like to get rid of rude messages that people add... I know I saw an article in a blog somewhere about it a time ago but I don't remember how to go about it. How do I get started removing things like that?

Thanks again, and have a great day! :)

Hi Arnaud. Be with you shortly. Watch here :) Trafford09 (talk) 15:52, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. :) Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 15:53, 2 June 2009 (UTC) I tried looking at Special:Recentchanges and finding stuff which shouldn't be added but there are only things like things not being backed up... is there any way to work against people adding swearing in articles for example? Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 16:01, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pleased to hear you've registered. Welcome to the fold! I'll place a good welcome section here in a minute, with loads of hints on how to get around, some of which you may not know, if you've not done much prior Wikipedia-editing.
Now, when you say that you'd like to get rid of rude messages that people add, do you mean that you'd be interested in doing some vandal-patrol? If so, great, and I'll get you some links too, to see if you want to start on it - such help is always appreciated. So, back shortly ... Trafford09 (talk) 16:05, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would love to do this 'vandal patrol'. Just tell me where I sign up! :) Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 16:08, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

Hi, Arnaud Rousseau. You can also talk to me right now. Here are a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below.

Countering vandalism

[edit]

Hello there. Welcome to Wikipedia. Now, you might want to check here, to see exactly what kind of stuff we consider unconstructive. There it lists what is and what is not vandalism. Looking through the recent changes for unconstructive edits is called Recent changes patrol. On that page, it happens to list several very useful tools for reverting vandalism. One of the most useful is Huggle, which loads the diff, or what was changed on the page, and allows you to decide whether to skip on to the next page, or revert that. However, you need the Rollback tool, which is granted by administrators to trusted users.

In the mean time, you can also try out using a little tool called Twinkle. That has warnings for users, can report users who persistently vandalize pages, and can also report users who have innapproriate usernames.

Everything that you might need should be listed on the pages I linked, but if you need more help, just ask. Cheers! Until It Sleeps 16:11, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I am on your IRC. :) Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 16:24, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

French Wikipedia

[edit]

And of course there's also the French version of Wikipedia, and many other languages. I expect you already realised that, but just making sure you knew. Salut, Trafford09 (talk) 16:25, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had heard of the French Wikipedia but had not visited. Because one of my reasons for editing is to help my English, I think I will stay here though. :) Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please revert yourself. It's not what's missing, but what's there. Franica never had a coat of arms. It did not exist in the third century. Modern French was never spoken in it. Aachen was not its "capital". It was not a country or nation in any modern sense and the article covers the meaning of "Francia" when it was no longer a monarchy but merely a province/region. 216.8.149.177 (talk) 17:12, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted. Sorry, I did not understand what your summary meant. :) Arnaud Rousseau (talk) 17:29, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
