WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Help if possible

[edit]

Hello. I would like to withdraw my AFD nomination for Olivia Tjandramulia after someone added a bunch of citations to it. I've put the withdrawn by nominator tag on it but don't know if I'm supposed to tell someone or do something else and if so, what and/or who? Can you help or advise please? Shrug02 (talk) 21:58, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shrug02: no worries at all, I have closed this one as a keep. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 22:02, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I request a deletion review?

[edit]

@Spiderone I'm useless with technology and this Wikipedia set up is so complicated. Can you tell me in basic how to request an AFD be reviewed? Shrug02 (talk) 11:19, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shrug02: please follow these instructions to the letter and it should be sorted. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:34, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Spiderone Thanks. Too complicated for me. I quit. Wikipedia mirrors life. Some people do what they like and get away with it. Sorry to have bothered you. Have a great day 🙂 Shrug02 (talk) 12:01, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another good editor lost. *sigh* Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:06, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shrug02 whilst I note that you are no longer a part of AfD, it's worth noting that Ekaterina Reyngold has now been deleted. I know it's a frustrating process but worth remembering that consensus is followed most of the time. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 13:31, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

@Spiderone Hello again. Thanks for doing that sorting business on the cricket AFDs. I'll get the hang of it one day. Giving the whole process another go since a couple of my previous ones have actually been decided now. See how these ones go. Thanks again. Shrug02 (talk) 19:00, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shrug02 you're welcome. Glad to see you back and holding these non-notable stats stubs to account. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 19:29, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Trying my best. Tennis project people are certainly persistent though. One of my two remaining tennis AFDs someone wrote an excellent summing up of why it should be deleted then today changed their vote because they found a Flashscore page with the player mentioned! That's literally a scorecard. Strange. Anyhow so far less push back from the cricket ones. Onwards we go 🙂 Shrug02 (talk) 15:07, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being employed (or being compensated in any way) by a person, group, company or organization to promote their interests. Paid advocacy on Wikipedia must be disclosed even if you have not specifically been asked to edit Wikipedia. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Caliban31. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Spiderone|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Caliban31 (talk) 13:00, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:19, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, quickdraw

[edit]

I'm not sure if there's a barnstar for being fast at SPI, but you beat me to it and it was excellently summarised. Anyways, thanks for the write-up and doing the heavy lifting. Bobby Cohn (talk) 21:10, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bobby Cohn thanks! I have a strong dislike for sockpuppetry and COI, so I couldn't resist filing this one. I'm amazed by how quickly these are being dealt with as well! Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 23:05, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
