Meco → Ex-pornographer

[edit]

Wikipedia:Username_policy says avoid controversial usernames (in your own interest). You say you've been perma-banned from one of the Norwegian Wikipedias, but you have not been blocked here that I can see. Why not choose a neutral name? Secretlondon 23:58, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's a question of openness, not of attempting to generate controversy. I find that I can express an essential statement of my background using Ex-pornographer as my chosen identity and then elaborate on this on my user page. The sentiments leading to my being banned from the Norwegian Wikipedia may in fact have been exacerbated by portions of my biography coming as a shock to some in the community, leading noone to step forward in my defense in the controversy which was the root of that disciplinary sanction. __meco 00:46, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • The fact that this is connected to your banning on one of the Norwegian wikipedias makes me feel uncomfortable. If you want to share details of your history why not use your userpage? Secretlondon 02:24, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • As I wrote, I will. However, I would be rather disappointed if I weren't allowed also to make some sort of expression using my chosen user name. Besides, this is the English Wikipedia, and although you brought up the connection to my banishment from no:, I don't readily see [in fairness] that it should be a substantial factor to consider in this request. __meco 07:05, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please choose a less controversial name. Your focus should be on building the encyclopedia, not creating controversial names. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:03, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have requested Ex-pornographer. I have given my reasons for doing so, stating explicitly upon inquiry that my intent is giving a brief hint of who I am and not on creating controversy. I opine that it should be a matter of course for any user to be able to choose an online alias which reflects some central aspect of his or her person (or biography as it were), not merely allusions to nonsense or juxtapositions of characters that have but private meaning to its owner (such as my current name, Meco). I believe that a name such as the one I have set my mind on is not "controversial" although it reflects on a topic that is (attributing the present qualms to emotional idiosyncrasy bearing on the name's perceived connotation). You may reject my request based on merely personal inclination, I suppose, however, I would think that a considered consensus among a few admins would arrive at the decision to allow this name change. __meco 15:39, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not done You might not believe it to be controversial, but Wikipedia:Username policy#Inappropriate usernames has clear policies what is considered to be appropriate. Your case might be borderline, but it still can be denied as potentially inflammatory. I'm sure you can pick a better, more neutral name which highlights a more positive aspect of your profile. I stress again, the emphaisis of wikipedia is building an encyclopedia through positive collaboration, not through negative connotations of a user. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:13, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sifting through the list defining what is considered an inappropriate username, I am unable to see any of the descriptions having a bearing on my chosen expression of Ex-pornographer. Would you be willing to point out any of the descriptions that are detailed at the Username policy page that fit this name? __meco 21:09, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's clear attention seeking and isn't helpful to the purpose of building an encyclopedia. I've no desire to get involved in wikilawyering with you. If you want to be renamed please come up with another name. Secretlondon 22:46, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • What's clear attention seeking to you to merely is flagging some significant information about who I am. I am new to the concept of "wikilawyering" and cannot help but wonder if it isn't but a euphemism for not wanting to own up to the fact that Wikiipedia's quite detailed guidelines on what is disallowed don't apply to this name change. What's the point of detailing such criteria in Wikipedia:Username policy if any individual administrator may instead decide not to go by them and instead go with his or her gut feeling even when it may not be rational. My current username is a juxtapostion of characters that only have meaning to me, and I would be disappointed if a username which actually carried some deeper meaning in describing its owner should be disallowed on the ground that an administrator preempts someone else taking offense because they perceive the name as having negative connotations (by association?). Should your position prevail the current guideline should be supplemented with a sweeping all-purpose "or any username which might be considered offensive for other reasons". Why not stand aside and allow someone else to decide on this name change? __meco 14:50, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Let me clarify a few points. 1. Renames can only be carried out by a bureaucrat, not an admin. 2. Bureaucrats are given the community mandate to deny a rename if potentially inflammatory. Two bureaucrats have expressed their unwillingness to carry out the name change. I'm afraid that even if you do appeal to other bureaucrats, they are not going to overturn the verdict because bureaucrats are given the community mandate to act in good faith and uphold the integrity of the encyclopedia. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:46, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking an unused account that has been inactive since 2006 is highly inappropriate. What makes you believe that CheckUser will give you any usage data for the inactive account? It only keeps data for about a month at most, so there is no way on Earth this is an acceptable block. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 22:33, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For these ones it's not as bad as the usurptions. The software doesn't allow you to make a name thats very close to an already existing one. The user really can't go and make a new name to fix capitalisation so we are more tolerant of those with few edits. I'm not sure what you want. You created an article Beussery which was deleted for being an advert. Z.E.R.O. → ZONE

[edit]
Question: Is it acceptable to change usernames more than once? — zero » 18:24, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We do actually have a user Zone who last edited in March 2007. Secretlondon 04:05, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you removed it this was your previous username change on 13 March, 2007. The reason you gave then was "Reason: I would like to use a better username than my current username.". Secretlondon 04:08, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So this means usernames can only change once, or go again in a few months? — zero » 16:18, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is no actual policy but we are more likely to do it if you have a decent reason - changing your username isn't supposed to be something trivial. Changing it twice in the space of a month for trivial reasons isn't likely to happen, especially when there is potential confusion with User:Zone Secretlondon 17:05, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to take both L2877884 and L28727884 to be misleading usernames as per Wikipedia:Username_policy as I believe they "Consist of a lengthy repetition, or apparently random sequence, of characters, e.g. "aaaaaaaaaaaa" or "ghfjkghdfjgkdhfjkg"" If you cannot get the random selection of digits correct I can't see how anyone else can. [edit]
As EOKA is a greek cypriot nationalist terrorist organisation I'll need to know what Afxentiou means before I'll rename. Secretlondon 08:53, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Afxentiou was a hero of the struggle against the British in Cyprus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigoris_Afxentiou - EOKA is not a terrorist organization.
Naming yourself after Grigoris Afxentiou is still a breach of Wikipedia:Username_policy. Secretlondon 10:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I very much doubt this, it is open to interpretation at the very most as I see nothing in Wikipedia's naming rules in the page mentioned that disallows such a name, Afxentiou only ever engaged British military targets, it is similar to naming oneself after any soldier or national hero of any country.--EOKA-Assasin 14:18, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
