Reliable Sources on Classical Astronomy.

[edit]

This post refers to Reliable Sources/Noticeboard/Archive 304 on the reliability of articles published in the Indian Journal of History of Science. Astronomy is not everybody's cup of tea. Reported ancient dates are considered outlandish. This is merely due to ignorance. Specifically, the ancient text of Surya Siddhartha states that Vega was the north polestar and Canopus was the south polestar when it was composed. Check Pole star. It has two figures under the heading Precession. One for the North and other for the South. North link Pole star#/media/File:Precession N.gif. The figure shows Vega was polestar/near the north celestial pole around 12,000 BCE. For the star Canopus in the next pic, at the south celestial pole around 12,000 BCE. After checking the facts would you say that the observer made incorrect observations or that the work under consideration was composed around 12,000 BCE?
