Etymology
[edit]H-dropped form of গহনা (gohona), from Prakrit 𑀕𑀳𑀡𑀓 (gahaṇaka), from 𑀕𑀳𑀡 (gahaṇa, “ornament”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit ग्रहण (grahaṇa, “taking; putting on”), with semantic shift. Cognate with Assamese গহনা (gohona), Odia ଗହଣା (gahaṇā), Hindi गहना (gahnā), Punjabi ਗਹਿਣਾ (gahiṇā). Doublet of গ্রহণ (grohon), গীর (gir), and গ্রেফতার (grephtar).
