The Germanic noun originates from Proto-Indo-European *kʷekʷlóm, *kʷékʷlos (wheel), which is also the source of Ancient Greek κύκλος (kúklos) (cf. cyclus) and Sanskrit चक्र (cakrá) (cf. chakra).
