From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English terven, tervien, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English *tyrfian (“to cast down, tumble, fall”) (in compound ġetyrfan, ġetyrfian (“to assail with missiles; attack, assault”), ġetorfian (“to stone”)), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *tirbijaną, *tarbijaną (“to wind, twirl, fling”), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *derbʰ- (“to wind, twist”). Cognate with Old High German zerben (“to spin, rotate”). Also in compound in Middle English overterven, in toppe overterve > topsytervy > English topsyturvy. Compare tervy, tirfe.
