[edit]Deverbal from помивам (pomivam, “to wash out”) (formally reflecting as earlier *pomyja). Related to Russian помо́и m pl (pomói, “swill, slops”), Polish pomyje (“slops, swill”), Old Church Slavonic помꙑѩ (pomyję).
