[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *koyug (“thick, dense”); cognate with Bashkir ҡуйы (quyı), Kazakh қою (qoü), Khakas хойығ (xoyığ), Tuvan хоюг (xoyug), Uyghur قويۇق (qoyuq), Uzbek quyuq and Yakut хойуу (qoyuu).
