Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *pékʷ-tis ~ *pkʷ-téy-s (“cooking, ripening, digestion”), from *pekʷ-. By surface analysis, पच् (pac, “to cook”, root) + -ति (-ti). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέψῐς (pépsis, “cooking, digestion, ripening”), Proto-Slavic *pȅťь.
