Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀱𑁆𑀞 (*paṣṭha). Sometimes connected to Sanskrit पष्ठवह् (paṣṭhavah, young bull). Cognate with Bengali পাঁঠা (pãṭha).
