[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀮 (pattala, “thin”), from Sanskrit पत्त्रल (pattrala, “leafy; *leaflike, thin”), from पत्त्र (pattra, “leaf, fallen object”) + -ल (-la, adjectival suffix, from Proto-Indo-European *-lós). Cognate with Assamese পাতল (patol), Odia ପାତଳ (pātaḷa), Odia ପାଁତଳା (pā̃taḷā), Bihari पातर (pātar), Awadhi पातर (pātar), Gujarati પાતળું (pātaḷũ), Hindi पतला (patlā), Marathi पातळ (pātaḷ), Konkani पात्तळ (pāttaḷ).
