Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀮 (pattala, thin), from Sanskrit पत्त्रल (pattrala, leafy; *leaflike, thin), from पत्त्र (pattra, leaf, fallen object) +‎ -ल (-la, adjectival suffix, from Proto-Indo-European *-lós). Cognate with Assamese পাতল (patol), Odia ପାତଳ (pātaḷa), Odia ପାଁତଳା (pā̃taḷā), Bihari पातर (pātar), Awadhi पातर (pātar), Gujarati પાતળું (pātaḷũ), Hindi पतला (patlā), Marathi पातळ (pātaḷ), Konkani पात्तळ (pāttaḷ).
