Etymology

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “MED gives the word as a compound of နှင်း (hnang:, snow) +‎ ဆီ (hci, oil), perhaps because roses can grow in snowy weather and have famously fragrant oil; it is unclear if this is the correct interpretation or folk etymology, however. Luce 1981 does not mention the "rose" meaning, while STEDT assigns no etymology to this term (hnâŋ "tube-rose, land-lily").”
